Eurogamer Review 8/10

Eurogamer.net - July 30, 2008

Submitted by NightWolf (355) at 11:35AM PST on July 30, 2008

"But for all the game's technical excellence, sumptuous graphics and epic soundtrack, Soulcalibur IV also serves to remind us just how bereft of basic innovation the one-on-one fight genre has become. Were it not for the customisation and online options, this would essentially be an HD rendition of previous games."

Namco Bandai In SHOCK Soul Calibur Breast Cover-Up

Kotaku - May 17, 2008

Yes. Shocking. For your submission, the above picture, showing Soul Calibur's Ivy as she's depicted on the game's official website. On the left, how she appears on the Japanese site. On the right? How she appears on the American site (breast covered up). This will not go down well with die-hard fans, Namco Bandai. They're not in this for the swordplay.

The Force is strong with the next installment in Namco's weapons-based fighting series. GameSpot reports that both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Soul Calibur IV will feature Darth Vader's "Secret Apprentice" from LucasArt's forthcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed as a playable character.

Three Returning Characters Revealed in Soul Calibur IV

1up.com - April 30, 2008

Sure, Yoda and Vader came out of nowhere, and the inclusion of guest characters designed by numerous famed anime and manga artists were certainly unexpected, but now Namco is really gearing up the shocking character revelations for Soul Calibur IV -- a new batch of shots released today show the startling return of samurai warrior Yoshimitsu, the tonfa-wielding Talim, and the Rhinoceros-wearing Rock!

IGN Review 8.7

IGN - July 30, 2008

Submitted by Animate (241) at 7:58PM PST on July 30, 2008

Soulcalibur IV is a lot of fun and I highly recommend it, especially to fans of the series. The game runs well, looks beautiful, sports great music and obviously has enjoyable combat. PS3 and 360 versions are just about identical (barring differing guest characters), though I felt that the optional install on the PS3 made things feel even quicker and more polished. In the end, both are worthy members of a long-standing series and you won't be disappointed with the purchase.

Some news bits of the fighters

1up - March 24, 2008

Submitted by Refreshment (333) at 6:49PM PST on March 28, 2008

"We'd heard rumors that other famous Japanese artists would be contributing newcomers to the fold, and the second one has already appeared -- this month's Shonen Age manga anthology debuts Angol Fia, a female fighter contributed by Mine Yoshizaki (Sgt. Frog). Angol Fia assuredly breaks from the series' historically based norm with her spiked bustier, creepy third eye, and rainbow-hued lance...this chick is straight out of the "magical girl" anime canon."

Soul Calibur IV Boxarts: 360 = Light Side

xbox360fanboy - March 9, 2008

Submitted by sagexsdx (148) at 10:47PM PST on March 9, 2008

The boxarts for the game are up on Gamestop's page for the game, and display the console-exclusive characters at the top of each respective unit. Now some have speculated that these are only placeholder, and while that is possible, the designs do hold an uncanny resemblance to the other entry in this series that saw exclusive characters.

According to this, Lizardman, Kilik, and Xianghua are all to be included in Soul Calibur IV. Lizardman’s the brutish guy with the sword and shield, and Kilik’s the button-masher favourite with the big pole. Xianghua’s the woman hardly anyone used.
