"Frontlines" aims to break out of shooter pack

Reuters - March 7, 2008

At first blush, THQ's "Frontlines: Fuel of War" seems like just another entrant in a recent string of military-themed shooter video games. But a few tricks could set it apart enough to turn it into a sorely needed success for THQ, which struggled last year with lackluster reviews and poor sales.

IGN Preview of Frontlines: Fuel of War

IGN - December 4, 2007

As any true Xbox 360 gamer knows, the system has its fair share of stellar war games to play. There's the Game of the Year contender, Call of Duty 4, there's Halo 3, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, and the upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company. So just where and how does Frontlines plan to fit in to the bunch and, more importantly, what does it bring to the table that the others only dream of? We recently spent a considerable amount of time playing through the first four single-player missions..

Frontlines: Fuel of War DLC Announced

Kaos Studios has posted up a progress report on the long overdue Frontlines: Fuel of War DLC. Although it’s long overdue, it seems to be worth the wait as there will be five new maps along with a host of brand new weapons to try them out. Each map will have exclusive weapons that range from Tank Busters to Rocket Jeeps and even new aircraft. You can see from our review that we enjoyed it, so DLC is always a welcome.

GS AU: Will you be offering cross-console multiplayer support? FD: No, we looked into it pretty heavily [...] the only way to do it for Xbox was the Live system, and while Live is fairly interesting, it has a lot of problems, one of which is that it takes a lot of things you can get for free and makes you pay for it. So we felt that it wasn't ready yet for our public. It takes away matchmaking, and you have to pay to host games...

"I'd expected its open nature to feel like a series of watered down multiplayer matches, but once you get into the heat of action it's a thrilling experience."

The way things are shaping up, Frontlines: Fuel of War has a chance to stake a significant claim on the multiplayer shooter world. While games like Halo 3 cover the sci-fi realm and Call of Duty 4 plays out its small infantry skirmishes, there is a wide-open door for a game like this that offers enormous online battles using tanks, airplanes and whatever else you find on the battlefield.

Shell and BP made a collective 33.7 billion dollars in profit last year, but while the oil companies are laughing right now (and raping, and pillaging, etc), the future according to Frontlines: Fuel of War is not one they will enjoy. By then, the scarcity of oil reserves will result in an East-West divide that can only be solved by hard men with big guns. Cue yet another near-future first-person shooter on the Xbox 360.
