Funcom confirms Age of Conan layoffs

Joystiq.com - November 25, 2008

TenTonHammer has confirmed layoffs at developer Funcom's US branch. Although the company would only acknowledge "staffing cuts," TTH reported rumors that 70% of the staff, mostly from the customer service and quality assurance departments, were let go. Although it's certainly no secret that Age of Conan is hurting at this point, the QA and CS departments are the two bookends of support on many MMORPGs. When there's no need for them, it speaks volumes about what happens next.

"With its essentially amoral tenor, one can almost think of Age of Conan as akin to Grand Theft Auto, with swords instead of machine guns." Positive review of Age of Conan.

AoC drops further on Metacritic

Metacritic - July 11, 2008

17 reviews have now been registered on Metacritic for Funcoms Age of Conan. The average score is now 80, which while still good is a substantial drop from the 86 they had last week. Lack of high end content is the main problem according to the most negative reviews. Funcom is working hard to deliver new content and have submitted their development plans for this summer. Critics suspects that these patches will rectify most of the negative issues.
