"Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is a triumph, not just in terms of bringing a difficult game to a new platform intact, but because it actually improves it in the process, and demonstrates a mastery of DS form and function."

GTA: China Town Wars heading to DS

Kotaku - July 15, 2008

Submitted by TheTimeRanger (1007) at 9:57AM PST on July 15, 2008

Nintendo has announced that Grand Theft Auto is hitting the Nintendo DS in the form of Grand Theft Auto: China Town Wars, a game built with a custom engine and set in a mondern-day Liberty City. Details were vague but the the news certainly stirred the crowd at the Nintendo E3 2008 press conference. We've had handheld GTA before, but handheld GTA on a device that can play a game for upwards of 14 hours straight? That's dangerous.

Disappointment Proves Third-Party Challenge On DS/Wii

Gamasutra - April 17, 2009

"We view the title's performance as more indicative of the difficulties inherent in the Nintendo market for third party products and not due to any misexecution on Take-Two's part. The disappointing first month sales reinforce our view that achieving meaningful success on Nintendo platforms remains a very difficult proposition for third party publishers."

GTA: Chinatown Wars sells 89K units in March

Joystiq - April 17, 2009

Submitted by oznerol (1) at 9:19AM PST on April 17, 2009

Proving the analysts wrong, GTA: Chinatown Wars launched far below their prognostications in March with a mere 89,000 units sold, NPD has confirmed to Joystiq. The game was expected to show that a high-profile M-rated franchise like GTA could perform well on Nintendo's handheld. With a mere 0.3% of the 29.3 million DS units sold in the US rocking the crime drama, that could be interpreted as not being a good sign for more big M-rated titles on the system.

GTA DS Bigger Than GTA PSP, Say Rockstar

Kotaku - December 24, 2008

Submitted by necron101 (15) at 10:18PM PST on December 24, 2008

The GTA games on PSP did a great job of cramming lots of stuff onto a UMD. Yet as big an achievement as that was, Rockstar think they can do better. And what's more, do better on the DS. Speaking with Nintendo Power, Rockstar Leeds boss Gordon Hall says "We are very proud of all of the PSP games we have made, especially the two GTA games, but this game is far bigger". Really?

GTA: Chinatown Wars Details Allegedly Leaked Via Survey

Kotaku - August 5, 2008

Submitted by lstormy10 (294) at 3:56PM PST on August 5, 2008

"A report from UGO, sourced from a reader submitted survey, hints at unreleased details on Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS. It's worth mentioning that virtually no details have been released on the game so far, so anything we hear will be considered "unreleased." We should also consider it rumor for now. The survey also allegedly spills details on what that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection support will be."
