Hidden inside the DS news : "Nintendo’s other big success story, the Wii, sold over 100,000 units last week – and its total sales have now surpassed those of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, despite arriving on the market almost a year after Microsoft’s machine."

I agree with almost everything you say there but I believe the prediction (survey) as future lifetime sales and fact (actual sales) as present how things are doing now. Which make me think that they don’t contradict each other. That’s the point I was trying to get to earlier. I can see your concern though in the Prediction (survey) article that retailers are predicting the Wii to come last and we are predicting the Wii to sell almost double of the other consoles.[ Speaker ] [ Level 18 ] [ Rank: 527 ]bids

Exactly. So I really don't understand the logic behind the UK retailer expectation re: Wii.
I think we need more information regarding the survey itself, like the actual question asked, the selection of the retailer, how much business those retailer do in the three home console etc.

You're right, it's the leader that is the longest lasting console...yet another reason why it makes no sense when people say that Nintendo should throw out another console when they can't keep their current one in stock...it makes no sense at all.
People have to remember that companies don't (or at least shouldn't) consider lost sunken costs when considering future actions. It doesn't matter how much money you've thrown at a console (the PS3 for instance), all that matters now is whether you'll amek more with that unit or with a different product.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

If I am not mistaken, the longer life sales has been historically proven only applicable / available as an option for the market leader (#1) console. It happened to NES and SNES, and it also happened to PS and PS2.
Only market loser (#2 or #3) tried to shorten the life of their current generation, in the hope that in the next generation (which they started), they can hope to win the race by starting early.
It happened to Sega (re Dreamcast), it happened to Microsoft (re X360). Not sure whether it also happen to Sony (re PS1 as new player), or Sega.[ Oracle ] [ Level 30 ] [ Rank: 14935 ]bids

I think it’s obvious that’s it’s the hot item at the moment because it’s the highest selling consol month after month.

To be honest im not sure the reasons why the retailers suggested the Wii as coming out last on this generation. We can only presume unless we talk to the retailers themselves. And I would presume its a collection of all the things you mentioned, fad, last gen graphic, PS3 and 360 having projected longer life sales.

But what is the reason ? Because Wii is a "fad" ? or because Wii is "last gen" graphic ?
Or is it because PS3 will have "10 years life" ? Or maybe because X360 S/W are selling outstandingly, much better than Wii's software ?
Without knowing retailer's reason, it will be very hard to predict the lifetime sales.
If the retailer ignore "NOW", and focus on the "Future", they will suffer. They have to focus on both "Now" and "Future" to prosper.[ Oracle ] [ Level 30 ] [ Rank: 14935 ]bids

I think it’s obvious that the Wii is still the hot item at the moment but it seems like the Uk retailers believe that both the 360 and PS3 will long outlive the saleability of the Wii thus finally overtaking it in life time sales.

What is more interesting is the fact that this news directly contradict Thereg survey of UK retailers, in which 49% expect 360 to be more successfull compared to Wii.
What is the reason for this disrepancy ? If retailer could not gauge correctly consumer interest, they will stock the wrong item, and lose money in the form of "missed opportunity" and "dead item".[ Oracle ] [ Level 30 ] [ Rank: 14935 ]bids

I understand your distinction between future and current, and I think it is very valid. Having said that, I know what I will do IF Wii LTD did a very big drop.
I usually stay away from LTD prediction, but if I see that Wii are only predicted to, say, sell 50 Million WW, and IF there is no major trend changes, I know that I will buy Wii LTD with ALL of the cash I have.
