Parents are fooling themselves if they hope Nintendo's Wii active games console, which uses a wireless handheld controller to replicate athletic movement, will stop their youngster becoming obese, a study says.

I agree with you on this article. The first day I got my Wii almost a year ago I immediately played Wii Sports and after playing the game to death for two hours (playing almost every single mode and what not), my arms were sore for the rest of the night (especially from trying out the boxing in the game and really going at it).
If you exercise only in 15 minute intervals and with 5 minute breaks, then you are not very likely to use that much energy as in, lets say, continuous exercise for at least a half an hour. Also, I believe that Wii Fit will burn a significant number of calories if you use it for at least for about an hour each day and actually get into doing the activities in the game (this statement is based off of what those game journalists from the industry have said about it in previews and impressions of the Japanese version of the game).[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 294 ]bids

Some things to note:
-It was an incredibly small sample of 11 kids
-they only played training modes on Wii Sports, not the full matches
-boys in the study used more energy than girls, especially in tennis (all kids were active in real-life sports)
-the study points out that their system does not detect arm movements well. This is a huge flaw because Wii Sports relies almost entirely on arm movements. Not being able to measure this movement accurately puts a lot of doubt into their numbers (which measures the trunk of the body, and down to the feet)[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

First, why did they only look at 15 minute intervals? And then 5 minute breaks between Wii sports games? Of course taking breaks will affect your energy expenditure.
I would like to have a look at the actual study itself, but when it says that energy expenditure was 50% higher, but "energy units burned" wasn't that high, I question the conclusion.
Also, I know that whenever I have a good session of Wii Sports (say, one hour or more), I know how sore my muscles can be. If you get off your butt and actually do the movements (as opposed to just twisting your wrist a bit), you should burn some calories.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

From the study, the key points :
- 51% more expenditure compared to XBOX (actually PGR3 on X360)
- 60 calories per hour for Wii (and maybe 40 calories per hour for X360, using 51% more info)
- No information about what constitute typical week of computer play, but I think it is a small figure (probably < 10 hours per week), since total energy expenditure is increased by < 2 percent per week.
- Wii Sport is still a good game, since it "prompts a teenager to practise basic motor control and fundamental movement skills is a plus"
- "Given the current prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity, such positive behaviours should be encouraged," it says.
- "The energy used when playing Wii Sports games was not of high enough intensity to contribute towards the recommended daily amount of exercise in children," say the authors.
I failed to see how the article can conclude "Parents are fooling themselves if they hope Nintendo's Wii active games console will stop their youngster becoming obese" from "The energy used when playing Wii Sports games was not of high enough intensity to contribute towards the recommended daily amount of exercise in children,"
