The guys at T3 are saying one of their inside men has heard word that Sony will be producing a slimmer, sexier PS3 heading for the shelves this autumn.

I agree that it is sort of a "chicken and the egg" thing as you described (nice description by the way), but I think that getting the price of the PS3 down to the equivalent of the Xbox 360's price would be better for sales than a slim version at this time. Also, Sony does have some good 1st and 2nd party developers that can bolster the software porfolio along with exclusives and the upcoming revised home service.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 294 ]bids

it's almost like a "chicken and the egg" thing. in order for third party developers to see worth in developing for the ps3, they need to see the sales. in order for the ps3 to sell, it needs good games.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 148 ]bids

what you say is true but my argument about them needing to boost sales is that people aren't really buying PS3 games. third party developers aren't seeing the returns necessary to validate the extra effort required to make ps3 versions.
we still hear about these problems today. EA recently said theyre still getting use to doing work on the PS3. gta iv was partially delayed due to the ps3. PS3 ports are getting the can too. Frontlines was canceled (though i don't expect much from the game anyway) for example.
im just saying that having more systems out there and more people buying games would help convince software makers that the ps3 is worth working on[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 148 ]bids

I doubt Microsoft will be in a huge hurry to the next Xbox. It and the PS3 are neck and neck in the graphics race and software right now is the money maker on the Xbox - announcing/releasing a new Xbox this soon would hurt the software ecosystem that Microsoft currently has set-up. Also, software is always one of the largest - if not the largest - things that can boost hardware sales and Sony would be better off on focusing on getting appealing software on the platform than taking time to release a slim version that can be held off until a later year.

Yes, but Sony can implement all of those things without having to slim down the case. If they slimmed down the case, they would have to get the factories set-up to manufacture with the new case. Also, at this point Sony can always produce new SKUs that do not rely on the inevitable slim version and can hold the slim version until 2009. This year, I think it would be best to try and go ahead to get the hardware sales of the PS3 up through software releases, colors, online services, larger HDDs, and marketing - all things that Sony appears to either be already doing or looking into.
I believe that Sony would be best in holding the slim PS3 until 2009 and use the high profile releases in the first half of the year to propel the platform into a good starting point for the second half of the year. A PS3 that matches up in price directly to the 360 and has a stronger software library would be better for sales this year rather than a major hardware revision.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 294 ]bids

my opinion is that sony needs to boost sales now. they were able to wait longer for previous generations because they were already the leader in sales.
however the 360 is already in it's 3rd year. if they don't get third party developers more confident in the platform (enough to devote more development and research time to code on such a different and difficult architecture), then it might be too late a year from now. a year from now there's going to be more solid rumors and details about the 360's successor.
if the 360's successor gets to market before the PS3 picks up in sales (kind of doubt this will happen), then Sony's going to be left in the dust and possibly forced to make another next gen console. that IS what kind of happened with the PS3: microsoft's release led to a rushed PS3 launch.
of course not saying the PS3 won't continue to sell if the next 360 launched; look at the PS2 (though the situation is slightly different). just saying that the PS3 needs any sort of boost at this point.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 148 ]bids

It could help this fall in matter of production costs, because by then, there could be 45 nm CPU and GPU availible, leading to a much much lower power consumption (smaller power supply unit, fans) and the slim blue ray laser is also pretty cheap.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 112 ]bids

I have a lot of doubt about the claims highlighted in this article.
First off, Sony needs to start making a little bit of money on the PS3 and launching a redesign so soon would not make sense in this regard (unless they would be saving money by making it slimmer, which I don't think would be the case). Secondly, Sony would be smart to keep the slim version until further in the lifetime of the PS3 when it can be used more effectively to boost sales. Also, Sony is usually pretty good in releasing redesigns at appropriate times and this autumn probably would not be the best. Lastly, at this time, price cuts and especially software are more important than redesigns for the PS3.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 294 ]bids
