iSuppli analyst Pamela Tufegdzic believes that 2008 is shaping up to be PlayStation 3's turn in the spotlight. She believes 2008 will be a turning year for the PS3 with a better lineup of games on the way likely to boost console sales. She also said that they "anticipate Sony will have another price slash on the PS3 this year, and come Christmas, consumers who originally bought the Wii will likely purchase the PS3."

Both of the PCs I have at the moment are not really worth upgrading. So if I wanted to play something like Crysis I'd have to buy a new box for around £600. Then upgrade it every year or so to play the new games. Having just bought a PS3 and two decent games for £300, it seems a much more attractive option. If I was rich then I'd just get everything (Wii,PS3,360,PC) :)
The other factor for me was the fact I have a lot of console gamer friends round and only a few PC gamers. So the PS3 is just all round better for me in my current situation.

I agree with some of your statements of the PC versus PS3, but all of the same statements apply to the 360 also. This is why I cannot see how this supposed analyst featured in this article can state that Wii owners will buy PS3. You can... but how much would it cost me to buy a PC that performed better than a PS3? Would I be able to get that PC and two games for £300? Which is what I've just done with the PS3 :)
Upgrading your hardware constantly is really annoying and expensive. The experience is also unpredictable not being a standard platform. Don't get me wrong, I do love my PC gaming. It's just a shame how much money you have to spend to keep up.

I am an early adopter of DVD (in 2001, I purchased a stand alone DVD player, and I bought PS2 in 2002, and had never played any DVD on PS2).
I am going to be a late adopter of Blu-ray (2009 or beyond). The reason is very simple : I don't have HDTV yet, and to enjoy Blu-ray to the fullest, I need HDTV.
To enjoy DVD, I only need component, and even using standard AV cable, I can enjoy DVD, which have significant improvement in movie quality compared to VHS or Video CD (not to mention DVD have only 1 plate, compared to 2 plate or more for VCD).[ Oracle ] [ Level 30 ] [ Rank: 14935 ]bids

When talking about consoles, those are exclusive. I don't care if something is put out on the PC, the PC market in the States gets a tiny fraction of console sales for the same title.
Also, you ignore the fact that the 360 can come (out of the box) with a much larger hard drive than the PS3. 360 has MANY more online features, including an incredible collection of downloadable games and media (including HD content).
What does the PS3 have? Better specs on paper (although no game has performed better than a 360 one, even exclusives) and a Blu-Ray player (which most consumers don't seem to care about). It's really not that terribly impressive.
Oh and only 12 million Blu-Ray players have been sold worldwide (that includes PS3s). Compare that with over 100 million DVD players in the United States alone. Hardly seems like people going "HD mad". Most people don't understand HD at all (just listen to customers looking at a new TV), so I find it hard to believe that most are going to run out and spend hundreds of dollars in a new player.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

On the other hand, for me the Wii/PC combo is great. If I want to play good nice fun games, I go to my Wii, if I wanna play good graphic high profile games, I go to my PC.
There is only one reason I may pick a PS3 or 360 up down the road: GTA 4. Since EA is buying T2 I think I have a good chance that it will come to the PC. I personal just hate the dual analog control in FPS. It is ok for racing, but even for sports game it seem not a big fit for me. How many of those can I get on the PC? Pretty sure at least three of them. So hardly what I'd call exclusive.
When you make comparisons there is a genuine advantage to getting a Wii and another console. The same can't be said for 360 & PS3. They're too similar.
When I compare the two. There is no contest. The PS3 is technically / computationally superior right? 360 I have to pay to play online and then wait for it break and have to be returned. With the 360, you have to buy additional hardware / drives to make it comparable to a PS3.
RE: Blu-Ray
I don't know about America but in the UK people seem to be going HD mad. I really can't comment for a country I don't live in, as I said before. I personally was happy to have Blu-Ray support for the day when I would invest in the movies. I too think HD players are a bit of a joke. Joe Public however is completely different. You also have to remember people have been holding back up until now to see which format comes out on top.

Lack of caring/interest in an HD player? Besides, not everyone wants to buy Blu-Ray discs and have a cost premium over DVD (what, about $10 more? $20 more for some older films).
I don't think that HD DVDs will ever have the success that DVDs had...the cost premium isn't worth it just for an incremental increase in picture quality (nowhere near the difference between VHS and DVD).
Oh and great 360 exclusives would include Gears of War, Bioshock, Mass Effect and Forza 2 (to give a diverse list).[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

You guys talk about a great catalogue. What decent games are 360 exclusive? I can think of Halo 3...and...Halo 3. Even that is over hyped Halo 2.5 (i.e. not worth buying a console for.)

When you are only talking about US market, then your statement is true : SNES did ultimately took the lead from Genesis.
However, IF you look at the Worldwide figure, SNES was always in the lead, while Genesis was always second. At least that is what I get from others who follow game sales since NES/SNES era. I agree that it is probable that PS3 need a price cut in 2008 to compete with X360, their primary competitor.
However, knowing Stringer, which is very profit oriented, and based on the fact that so far in 2008, PS3 is doing better (slightly) than X360 World Wide (Europe + US + Japan), I don't see this (price cut) happening. The only way for another price cut to happen IF PS3 do worse than X360 WW significantly, or IF Microsoft do a price cut in 2009. I didn't see any reason for MSFT to do a price cut in 2009. We'll see whether I am right or wrong.
For those who think casual Wii will buy PS3, please remember that casual usually own only ONE console. It was PS1, it was PS2, and it is Wii now. Usually casual is a late adopter, and buy at low price point (say 100 - 200). The only reason some casual buy early this generation is because Wii Sport. Nothing more, nothing less. There are some casual gamer that haven't switched to any of the next gen console (Wii, X360 or PS3), and will only do so at lower price point. Who can first lower the price to the 100 - 200 USD price range ? Nintendo, with their "cost concious" design from the ground up.
Personally, I don't like XBOX, and I own PS1 and PS2. However, at this moment, X360 Elite and it's library of exclusive game is sure more tempting to my hardcore side compared to PS3. The reason I haven't bought either PS3 nor X360 is the $60 price point for games, and the fact that I don't have a lot of gaming time (family and work kill my gaming time), and I have lots and lots of DS game to play (on the road, while waiting during office time). I have lots of console game I bought and haven't opened /played yet.

You say consoles that are behind never come to take the lead, but that is not true. SNES was behind Genesis for years and it ultimately took the lead. There's probably other less notable examples as well. "Quite the contrary" to me would be to say the opposite of your previous sentence.

Thats basically the standard play for consoles that are behind. Consider XBOX & GC, dropping once close to a year, and then again almost a year later, while the consoles with lead marketshare leverage that advantage and turn it into longer periods of time without price drops.

Quite the contrary: Normally the market leader does nothing but widen the gap in subsequent years. iSuppli and many analysts that had originally forecasted doom for Nintendo and continued dominance by Sony still stubbornly stick to it.

Many casual gamers on the Wii probably will not buy another console for quite awhile if ever and those hardcore gamers on the Wii that actually do buy another console would have the choice of PS3 or 360 and at this time, that choice would be mostly taste in software (and 360 at this time has the more expansive library with a larger number of quality titles). Also, there are quite a few gamers on the Wii that really do not want another console at this time - I am one (my situation is that I play my Wii, DS, and PC - I can get most of the hardcore games that don't come to Wii on my PC, not that I don't already have a pretty nice selection on the Wii). I also see a price cut coming. Maybe in April (next fiscal) but pretty sure as soon as 45nm CPU/GPU are ready. Sony got momentum, but they still far behind and need to catch up to the 360 at least and that fast. And this means they need sales on Wii level, at least in some weeks/month.
If they don't keep up and MS may racing father ahead in NA, third party could tend to keep cheap bought by MS for exclusivity. Something that would hurt Sony in a great way.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 112 ]bids

I completely agree. My intention was always to pick up a 360 a year or two after I got the Wii at launch. I'm getting a new plasma TV soon but I still haven't looked at getting a 360...I'm still having way too much way playing the Wii (and I haven't gotten to all the games I want on it yet).
I think people are underestimating the Wii's library and assuming that people will "have" to buy another system to get more games. That simply isn't the case for many (most?) people who have one.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

People who aren't really gamers getting back in to gaming. I think the Wii has a lot to do with increasing the popularity and image of gaming_in_general. I think everyone will benefit from this. It's made gaming more socially acceptable where it used to be the geek's domain.
Of course the Wii will always sell more. It appeals to more people. I still think 2008 will be a good year for the PS3. I've seen casual gamers get sucked into more hardcore games like COD4. The online aspect seems to be really contagious.

I will definitely NOT buy PS3 in 2008. Maybe in 2009, after I upgraded my TV to HDTV (preferably one with 1080p), and PS3 (80GB) priced at $ 300.
Maybe I am just too jaded on Graphic, or maybe I don't really care about graphic (after playing DS game a lot, which might have lowered my graphic expectation). I saw DMC 4 on PS3, and even though it is nice, it is not interesting to me (probably because I don't like DMC games). Lost Odssey sure is beautiful, but I prefer Blue Dragon to it.
In summary, I think the hardcore might get PS3 in 2008, but I seriously doubt the casual will do it, not when they already have Wii.
We will see in NPD 2008 whether my prediction are right or wrong. If I am wrong, then PS3 2008 will be > than Wii 2008. If I am right, then PS3 2008 < Wii 2008.[ Oracle ] [ Level 30 ] [ Rank: 14935 ]bids

I've had my Wii about a year now and I've just pre-ordered a PS3. I saw a bundle for: 40GB PS3 + NG:Sigma + Uncharted:DF which was priced at £300 and could not resist. I'll also be getting COD4:MW pretty soon. This purchase also had a lot to do with GTA being on the horizon.
As much as I love my Wii, it doesn't really cater for my hardcore side. The PS3 should fill that gap nicely.
I think a lot more Wii owners will get a PS3. Especially with some decent bundles about and definitely_if_they slash prices again. I think a lot of people will make the same move I did, so I'm betting 2008 will see a lot of Wii owners become PS3 owners. In my whole 20 years of PC gaming (since 1987, XT Turbo 10 MHz), there was only 2 occasion in which I have to do significant upgrade of my PC because the current PC can not play a game I wanted to play. That 2 game is FFXI (CPU + Graphic Card) and Neverwinter Night 2 (only graphic card, not total computer).
On average, I do total upgrade of my PC every 4 years (Motherboard + Memory + HD). I buy Monitor every 6 years or so, and my current PC was used by me since 2002.
PC gaming is a quite expensive, but I am staying one generation behind the "cutting edge", so my investment is not too much (cutting edge processor is at least 2 - 3 times more expensive than the older ones).
