GTA IV smashes day one sales record

Data obtained by MCV from official UK industry monitor ChartTrack shows that Rockstar’s GTA IV has become the fastest selling game ever in a 24 hour period.
Total online and High Street sales for the game hit 609,000 in one day.
335,000 copies were sold on Microsoft’s machine – 55 per cent of sales and a new record for the console.
GTA IV sold 274,000 copies on PS3 yesterday – 45 per cent of all sales and another format record breaking performance.

Many game retailers, and every online retailer have already sold out of the game ( Gameplay, Game, Amazon, Play.) We should probably wait for a restock in the coming days and the full week numbers to get a better sense on how is it going to be split between the two versions.
55/45 was probably the first shipment.

It doesn't play because the US hardware base is totally different. ~10 million US for the 360 versus ~4 million PS3. There is only a difference of a million between the two consoles in the UK. Totally different scenario.[ Speaker ] [ Level 7 ] [ Rank: 1446 ]bids

The PS3 is comparatively strong here, I would expect the difference in the US to be much greater. 65:35 maybe.
Doing better than Halo 3 would indicate to me that it's pushed hardware on both platforms. Halo's NPD was 3.3m and did 266k in the UK first week. GTA:IV has done more than that already on the 360 alone. Doesn't mean a lot but I'm having second thoughts about a couple of shorts for April NPD.
