Apple will likely launch a long-promised feature, dubbed the App Store, which will let outside developers pour software into the iPhone and iPod Touch. Apple is the first to master a pair of tricks that have made Nintendo's latest products so compelling--a touch-screen interface and the ability to pick up on motion. Apple has crammed both capabilities into its iPhone and iPod Touch.

Apple, like Nintendo, is one of the last integrated Hardware and Software Company. If anyone can "disrupt" Nintendo's offering, it is Apple. Microsoft is strong at S/W, but weak at H/W (despite Zune, X360, Microsoft Mouse & Keyboard). Sony is strong at H/W, but weak at S/W (no OS level, medium level of gaming skill like God of War, Hot Shot Golf, Gran Turismo).
However, I don't think it is easy for Apple to do gaming, just like it is not easy for Nintendo to do phone OS + S/W. I don't think Apple will get into gaming in the next 5 year, and I also don't think Nintendo will get into phone device in the next 5 year.

Connects to your Wii / DS, touch screen, motion sensing, plays Mario Kart and we're all pretty much sold aren't we? Hang on a minute, we're all so blind. Nanna wasn't so crazy when she talked into the Wii-mote! Nintendo just haven't given us the SIM card! :P
I too hope Apple's move will get Nintendo to branch out into multi-purpose devices akin to Apple's Iphone. I don't want an Iphone but I do want Wii Talk.

Sure people are buying more Apple hardware than ever before but you only have to look at the pathetic performance and selection of games and you realise gaming is not really Apple's thing / focus.
OK Nintendo might feel a pinch... but kill it!? Dream on Apple! How late can you arrive to the party and still expect cake!?
While I'd play motion sensing monkey ball on a friends Isheep I still don't think I'd ever purchase one myself...

M$ is still riding the touch wave. They don't actually do anything well. They're just still sitting in a strong position. Zune? WTH is that!? :P
If Sony can't touch Nintendo in the portable gaming arena, how will Apple? Nintendo have all the top properties. Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Pokemon etc. Why on earth would anyone buy an Apple gaming device over a Nintendo one? Who would not buy a DS because they have an Iphone that plays games? What kid is going to skip Nintendogs and Pokemon so they can play tilt sensitive monkey ball on the move? They already do that at hone on the Wii...
If Nintendo partnered with a hardware company with mobile experience...say Nokia? Why couldn't they produce a decent portable device?
I think it's much more likely than gamers buying Iphones instead_of_a_DS. Which is what this article seems to be saying. Kill the DS? Don't think so. Impact, yes. Kill, no.
