According to NPD's Anita Frazier, in the first 20 months of availability (the entire tally of sold units so far), the Wii "sold 60 million total S/W, 33 milion is third party. This does not include Wii Sports"
During its first 20 months of availability, the Xbox 360 sold "35 million software units, 29 Million is third party"
Over its entire lifespan Xbox 360 has sold 82 million units total (67 million units third party)

IIRC, one of the reason Microsoft think that XBOX are not as successfull as they hope is because XBOX was released one year later than 360. This thinking / hypothesis is also one of the reason 360 were launched so early, so that it will have better sales than other console.
By Microsoft way of thinking, the fact that Wii are released one year after 360 should mean Wii should have worse sales than 360, which mean current Wii # must be making lots of head-scratching on Microsoft Gaming Studio personnel.[ Oracle ] [ Level 30 ] [ Rank: 14935 ]bids

Good find, puts it in black and white. I am somewhat curious how much the mountain of shovelware / PS2 ports available for the Wii has an impact though. Or sports, even.
i.e. if you are a third party releasing new IP, are you better on the 360 or the Wii? I'd still be inclined to say 360 at this point. From a market perspective, these are the sorts of games which are harder to predict.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 291 ]bids

Taking all that into account, it's abundantly clear that both Microsoft and Nintendo are keenly aware of the importance of third parties in the future success of their consoles, but it also highlights one important point: If Nintendo wasn't a Microsoft competitor, why would it care about Nintendo's claims of dominance?
Makes you wonder, doesn't it?
But in the end, there's really no way to judge the success of third parties on either console in a way that would be fair to all parties involved. Sure, there are a number of factors involved, including hardware sales and first-party sales, but it's practically impossible to compare each fairly.

I think that it is always harder to get a lot of sales in the first year of a next generation timeframe. The hardware is new and there are not a lot of releases. Developers had more time to develop for Wii, so naturally more games were released in its 1st year. Wii also benefited from being low tech, so that games could be made more cheaply $, faster, and upgraded ports + remakes.
