Sony has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that PlayTV has shipped 85,000 units to retailers in the UK.
The hardware add-on, which acts as a freeview box and personal video recorder, went on sale last weekend and retails for GBP 69.99.
Pre-orders for the peripheral were around 9000 according to Sony.

Re: HD compatible...Is that necessary? I hear that Freeview, in its current state, doesn't carry HD channels anyway.
As for PlayTV...it CAN handle HD signals...it is a matter of the Freeview group broadcasting in MPEG2 HD such as in Sweden,France and Australia. IF UK goes DVBT2 then there MAY be an issue.

This is a standard free view tuner and the only benefit I can see is to bring together under one hood more media features. TV being the most common although obviously this only caters for over the air TV and not Cable and Satellite broadcasts which are were the real HD programming reside currently within the UK.
I am not aware that any HD enabled TV actually up scales the Free view broadcast.
