Gamezine: 'Following Sony's announcement of Q3 hardware sales, we thought we'd compare the lot. It looks like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 basically sold the same amount in 2008.
Sony's PlayStation 3 sold less in the third quarter of 2008 (ie. the Oct-Dec holiday season) than in 2007, but the strength of the console's earlier sales did it proud, shipping* 10.8 million in 2008 (up from 2007's 8.85 million).

Yes, if the economy wasn't so bad, I could definitely see a different picture, but i still think PS3 will get a price cut this year, before Christmas at least and it will outsell the 360 most likely even if its by a small margin. FF XII in Japan will explode , Europe loves Sony and PlayStation in general, ( 360 disputed 1 million lead, is at a much lower price point with 1 year head start) I really think a pricecut, no matter what Nintendo or MS does, will provide that spark the PlayStation needs, but ur right, the economy is its worst enemy right now.[ Guru ] [ Level 17 ] [ Rank: 570 ]bids

Yes it has a good line up but so do the competition. Its price point will always be higher and the competitions will always be lower. The worst news for Sony right now is just how many 360 sales are happening in Europe and this is the real battle ground for Sony and they are losing it badly.
Could they make a price cut right now after suffering such huge losses and the Yen working against them I doubt it, then again if it did could it cut enough to make it really matter. What happens if Wii receives a price cut this year and Microsoft counter with another.
I think at the beginning of the year Sony had it all to play for and they were succeeding but Microsoft came in with OS upgrade (NXE), Price cut and huge marketing campaign over the Christmas period. Nothing Sony has done to date has suggested they have anything like that up their sleeves.
All that aside it is still promising that the PS3 sells as well as it does and I think if the economic climate was any different and people had more money to spend it would of been such a different story.[ Oracle ] [ Level 30 ] [ Rank: 60 ]bids

Yes, but at a price point much higher than the competition it matches it. If it can get a price drop before Christmas, sales will go bonkers. Plus the strong lineup of games will help PS a lot this year.[ Guru ] [ Level 17 ] [ Rank: 570 ]bids

In short, no.
"Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head David Reeves, said [Sony being the most expensive console] is going to remain that way for some time to come. His reasoning? The only way for Sony to weather the current financial squall is to protect themselves -- "It's like being an armadillo," Reeves said. Sony isn't denying the possibility of a PS3 price cut, stating, "It is possible that as the cost [of manufacturing] comes down, we will be able to do it," though there are no explicit plans to do so.
