Micheal Pachter foresees a world without console wars, calling the current crop of hardware "the last generation of consoles." The ballsy claim was made during GamesBeat 2009, a conference going on in parallel to GDC, where the Wedbush Morgan analyst reportedly declared that the future belonged to a "standard delivery platform" instead.

RE: Pachter says this console generation is the lastThere is no way Sony, MS, and Nintendo would proactively agree on delivering their games over a single platform, no matter who owned it. They will only follow that path if they have to, i.e. if a service like OnLive becomes incredibly popular.
Otherwise in the short term (the next generation) I still see 3 separate consoles with possibly all games delivered (for purchase) over the Internet, and playable without needing to be connected to the Internet.
Of course if one of the actual console companies extremely dominated and another was not making profit, a situation much more different than even now with the Wii [where Sony & MS will still be profitable], only then would one of them potentially join a console company that might have established their own platform digital delivery system.
But a third party may be more likely to succeed. The 3 companies would prefer to either do it themselves or join a 3rd party so much more than joining a rival.
I'm not saying it won't happen, it just probably won't happen easily or the way some might envision. But 2 generations from now, I'd say it would almost definitely happen.
I think Pachter likes to make far sided predictions simply for the chance of them coming true, makes him look that much better at predicting. Whereas if they don't, people could say, well he was almost right and no one else predicted it so...
I also don't see PS4 releasing as late as 2015. I think Sony will definitely wait longer than previous generations or at least try to, but 9 years before it's even launched, I seriously doubt that. If that was in their plans at all, then they should be talking about an even longer lifespan for PS3 right now lol.
5 years for PS1, 6 years for PS2, PS3 would probably be around 6-7 years before a successor.[ Oracle ] [ Level 26 ] [ Rank: 241 ]bids

This generation will definitely be longer.
It won't be the "last" generation of consoles.
Plenty of reasons but here's one. Nintendo. They've been making money off of gaming hardware for years, even the GameCube. They aren't going to junk their business model because everyone but them is struggling with it.
Long term things will change but not by 2012 and it's far too early for a service like OnLive to become a sustainable reality. I'm disappointed in the gaming media this week for not finding some proper networking experts to talk to and assessing how this would scale out to consumer broadband connections. Demos on a LAN, potentially a Gigabit one simply don't cut it. Not to mention other issues even if you could guarentee the 5Mbit a second needed for 720p they are touting.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 291 ]bids

I certainly will agree this generation will be longer and currently forsee modifications to the systems outside of what one would expect of a console. What I mean is moving the goal posts something that is not supposed to happen to a true console. I think we already see Nintendo doing this with products such as the DSi which potentially introduces games that can only be played on a DSi model yet still retains the DS roots.
If they do not go down the tinkering root then the Wii HD model will force the hands of Sony and MS which may produce the last round of consoles as we know them now.[ Oracle ] [ Level 30 ] [ Rank: 60 ]bids

I am all you can eat but even I am pretty sure they would not be happy with 250 from a large portion of its userbase.
They are only just gettings to grips with services such as the BBCi player and its copy cats.
The discussion here at the moment is how do we charge back to companies like the BBC. This says to me any model that has such large requirements on bandwidth will certainly bring with it more controversy. After all the providers pay for the bandwidth consumed even if the end user does not, so this will have to be passed back someplace up or down the line.[ Oracle ] [ Level 30 ] [ Rank: 60 ]bids

However, countries like Canada for instance, typically have the consumer accounts capped at 60GB/month which would mean only 45min/day of access at 5MB speed.

*when I say if a service like OnLive became popular, it would have to become popular enough to have established itself as the new form of distribution, thereby eliminating the success of console companies entirely. I don't see that happening. I see the console companies more agile than that with their internal developments.
