The chip in question (the BU8844FV Voice Generation ADPCM Decoder LSI) was designed specifically for voice OUTPUT, for things like voice guidance systems in appliances, computers and GPS navigators.
Interesting indeed. Maybe our Wii-motes will be talking to us, instead of the other way around."

I recall Nintendo making some voice recognition patents a few months ago.
"Before some of you get too ahead of yourselves, yes, a speaker can act as a microphone, but they aren’t always a good solution. The Wii remote speaker would provide horrible sound quality which would be useless for games.
The chip described as an ‘audio translator’ is probably laymans terms for a ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter). They are common everywhere, and you’ve probably got a couple in your computer handling the microphone port. But it simply converts an analog signal (waves of voltage) into digital (ones and zeroes). Voice recognition would need to be handled by the Wii if it were to be implemented.
I would say most people were correct about it being used for a headset or a microphone attachment, but what strikes me as strange is why the audio wouldn’t be converted to digital directly in the microphone attachment - instead of increasing the cost of the base Wii remote with extra components. A weird design decision."
That's a post by chillyp discussing the likelihood of the speaker being used as a mic, and other things.
I wonder why Nintendo haven't used this already. Did they just forget to take it out or are they planning to use it soon.

I found something else interesting.
