US video game sales drop 25 percent in March

U.S. retail sales of video game hardware, software and accessories fell 25 percent in March from a year earlier to $1.1 billion. It marked the fourth month of decline as Sony Corp.'s new PS Vita handheld failed to spark a turnaround.

Sega 7.1 billion yen loss, kills games, shrinks company

Citing the challenging economic climate and changes in the video game market in the U.S. and Europe, Sega Sammy this morning said it expects Sega's operating losses for the previous year to reach into the billions of yen and that they need to cancel game development and shrink the company.

$3.3 billion spent outside of new boxed games in Q4 2011

NPD reported sales for the US and key European markets reached $3.33 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011 (Oct. - Dec.). The number covers "used games, game rentals, subscriptions, digital full-game downloads, social network games, downloadable content and mobile games." To be extra clear, that means "everything besides new physical copies of games sold in retail stores."

Sony announced this morning that sales of the PlayStation Vita have reached 1.2 million globally, boosted by the recent launch in Americas, Europe and PAL territories. According to the company, sales of the hardware have "exceeded expectations," with software sales for the new handheld surpassing 2 million units.

Nintendo’s has lowered its forecasts for FY2012 after reporting a net loss of ¥48.3 billion loss for the nine month period ending December 2011, compared to a profit of ¥49.5 billion in the previous corresponding period. Nintendo’s net sales were at ¥556.1 billion for the period, down from ¥807.9 billion in the same nine months in 2011. It now expects a full-year loss of ¥65 billion. Sales for the year are now predicted to be at ¥660 billion, down from a previously expected ¥790 billion.
