57.6 million Xbox 360 units have been sold worldwide

Posted over at Microsoft’s website, the report indicates that 57.6 million Xbox 360 consoles have been shipped worldwide as of September 30, though the number of units shipped this quarter (2.3 million) is down when compared to the same period last year (2.8 million).

Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton has announced the PlayStation Vita will arrive in North America on February 22, 2012. As previously revealed, the new handheld will arrive in two flavors: a 3G/Wi-Fi-enabled package for $299.99 in the U.S. and a Wi-Fi-only model for $249.99 in the U.S. and Canada. Europe will receive both systems on the same date in February. The release date also includes Africa, the Middle East, and Australasia.

Halo: The Movie will happen in time for a release next year, according to a new report. The French press kit for the new novel Halo: Cryptum, apparently contains the line: "A film adaptation is set in 2012. It will be conducted jointly by two heavyweights of American cinema: Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks." 343 Industries, guardians of the Halo IP are currently working on Halo: CE Anniversary - out next month - and Halo 4 set for a release at the end of 2012.

NPD: US retail video game sales fell in September

U.S. retail sales of video game hardware, software and accessories dipped 4 percent to $1.13 billion in September, according to market researcher NPD Group. Sales of the games themselves grew somewhat, but this was overshadowed by lower sales of game consoles and accessories.

The new 4-player co-op missions take place outside of the single-player game, and aren't affected by your Mass Effect 1 or 2 saves. "Players can choose from a variety of classes and races, form an elite Special Forces squad, and combine their weapons, powers and abilities to devastating effect as they fight together to liberate key territories from enemy control."

Microsoft announced this morning that Gears of War 3 surpassed three million sales during its first week at retail. The publisher also reveled in this small window of opportunity to say that Gears 3, in just one week, "has already grossed more than any 2011 video game to date."

A happier medium for motion-based controls for Forza 4 is the Wireless Speed Wheel, which despite looking more like U-shaped handlebars for a mountain bike than a steering wheel, works surprisingly well in conjunction with the Kinect sensor.
