This morning, Ubisoft revealed better-than-expected earnings for the quarter ending December 31, 2010. As part of the earnings report, the company also announced that it had shipped 6.5 million units of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the latest installment in its award-winning, critically acclaimed action adventure series.

According to China's Ministry of Culture, Activision-Blizzard's real time strategy game Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty has passed the Ministry's content approval process.

Blizzard Shelved StarCraft: Ghost to Support WoW

Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime has revealed the real reason that StarCraft: Ghost, the action/stealth spinoff to the studio's smash hit RTS series, was indefinitely postponed in 2006. The truth of the matter is that the game was shelved because Blizzard had its hands full with other titles.

Attention all gamers: Just in case the past year hasn't quite satisfied your Blizzard fixation, what with the releases of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, you'll get a few more chances before 2011 is out. Blizzard Entertainment has announced that its sixth BlizzCon gaming convention will be held this year on Friday, October 21, and Saturday, October 22, at the Anaheim Convention Center, in Anaheim, California.

During Activision Blizzard's quarterly earnings report today, the video game publisher divulged some fascinating statistics about one of their key franchises, Call of Duty. Since Call of Duty: Black Ops launched in November 2010, a staggering 27 million gamers have spent an average of 52 minutes per day playing the shooter online according to Activision's internal estimates. Incredibly, the average Facebook user spends roughly 55 minutes daily on the social network.

Tuesday Blizzard announced that StarCraft 2 owners can now beta test three Bizzard-made custom games created to play within its popular sci-fi RTS. These include a collection/cooking title called Aiur Chef, the puzzle/strategy game StarJeweled, and a cool survival and siege title called Left 2 Die.

There’s no question that when Blizzard releases a new game, whether an insanely anticipated sequel with a development time measured in decades or a measly expansion, it’s an event of cataclysmic proportions. And Activision have just announced that if Blizzard don’t make their 2011 date for one of their new releases, both of them will drop in 2012. Speculation places Diablo 3 and the next installment of Starcraft 2, Heart of the Swarm as the likely candidates.

Thanks to "continued declines in the music genre," Activision yesterday announced that it plans to not only "discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011" (read: cancel it) but also to "disband Activision Publishing's Guitar Hero business unit." But what about the DJ Hero franchise, and the promising DJ Hero 3D, you ask? "We will release no new music or skateboarding games," CFO Thomas Tippl said of this calendar year.

PlayStation 3 sold 6.3 million units in the three months ending December 31, down by 0.2 million units on the same time period from last year, although Sony has already met its sales projection for the year. Total global PS3 sales now stand at 47.9 million.
