Starcraft II is very likely to become one of the best-selling games of all time. Industry sources (via Fudzilla) report that the game is expected to sell some six to seven million copies within its first fiscal year. That would be $171 million in profit and a total of $350 million in sales. By contrast, the original Starcraft has sold some 9.5 million copies.

On the eve of the release of one of the most anticipated video games in history, it should come as no surprise that Blizzard's title has broken 800,000 pre-orders. While Activision Blizzard can no doubt already be envisioning the padding to their bottom line for the fiscal year, gamers can't seem to wait to get their Zerg, Protoss or Terran on when StarCraft 2 lands into their hands come midnight and it certainly shows.

Nintendo posts quarterly loss on slumping sales from few software titles, strong yen Nintendo sold 3.15 million of its DS game consoles during the quarter compared with 5.97 million a year earlier. The company saw steady hardware sales for Wii, rising to 3.04 million units from 2.23 million the previous year, but Wii software sales slumped to 28.17 million from 31.07 million

Normally, the release of a PC game – even a highly anticipated one – wouldn’t be a particularly big deal for investors. But when that game is “Starcraft II,” all the usual rules are thrown out the window. Analysts expect the game, which ships to retail on Tuesday, to sell up to 4.5 million copies by the end of August. To put that in perspective, that’s nearly twice as many copies as the year’s best selling console game to date.
