Prince of Persia: Rival Swords is a PSP re-release of 2005’s Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones that was featured on the PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, and PC. The game is the third part of the Sands of Time trilogy. For those new to the series, you play as the Prince of Persia (surprise?) in ancient Persia caught in a time traveling plot.

The game places as a third-person action game with a focus on acrobatic abilities. The third installment added stealth to the Prince’s list of abilities in which you can silently dispatch guards. Part of the story is an enchanted sand that has caused the Prince to go schizo. Throughout the game, a darker personality will question what you are doing and at times the personality will even take over, transforming you into the Dark Prince. Once again, you will acquire sand that allows you to manipulate time (basically giving you a do over after you miss a jump or take heavy hits from an enemy).

Rival Swords on the PSP features additional content. Instead of automatically destroying sand portals in previous versions, the PSP game includes an additional minigame in which you dive into the portal to close it. The version also features a chariot race in which you navigate through obstacles and fight the Vizier’s men. Ubisoft also gave the PSP version multiplayer game play in a mode to race through levels against your friends.

Also see Prince of Persia: Rival Swords (Wii).

Gamespot Review 8.1/10 "Rival Swords on the PSP is as fully featured as its console counterparts, and it offers a lot of extra content to boot. While not necessarily enough to attract fans of the series who already fought through Two Thrones, the new levels and multiplayer functionality work well to pad out the package and improve upon an already great game."

GameDaily Review 7/10 "Prince of Persia: Rival Swords could've been an instant classic if there was more time spent on the presentation and an all-out chariot racing mode with extra tracks and more moves to be unlocked over the course of the game. As it stands, Pipeworks did a commendable job giving Prince of Persia fans a reason to experience this adventure."

Cheat Code Central 3.5/5 "Regrettably, Rival Swords offers nothing to players that have already experienced Two Thrones. Aside the fact that this is a handheld version, there really is no reason to even pick this up unless you like your Prince to go."
