Originally scheduled as a launch title for the Wii in Japan, Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors is the first installment of the Dragon Quest series heading for the Wii in Spring 2007. Dragon Quest is a popular JRPG series in which the player takes the role of a party of heroes who fight monsters using medieval weapons, magic, and other items. The player's characters gain experience points that improve their abilities by defeating opponents. Dragon Quest has been Square Enix's second most popular series.

The Wii installment of the series is a bit different from standard Dragon Quest games (IGN likens it to Kenshin Dragon Quest). You can use the Wii-mote as your sword but the game does not utilize the nunchuck. Instead, your character moves on a set path, allowing you only to go forward or backward. The focus of the game is really on the battle mode, allowing you to take on the role of the hero and beat the enemies in hand-to-hand combat.

IGN Hands-On

IGN.com - May 12, 2007

The preview talks about the different ways in which the Wiimote is used in the game and how the game is designed. Dragon Quest Swords is an on-rails type of game, you use the B button to move forward along the path until enemies are encountered. The preview describes the different aspects of combat, such as choosing the angle of attack (up-down, left-right, diagonal) and how blocking works. This quote sums up the previewers mood toward the game: "Overall, the demo offered a good amount of fun...but it's, in its current form, a simple design that's far from a game that's going to reach classic status on the Wii system."

GameSpot Hands-On "Combat is handled simply, you'll just slash the Wii remote to attack. In the demo it looked like there were about three major motions that resulted in different slashes: a simple horizontal cut, a simple vertical cut and diagonal slashes from either corner of the screen." "Holding the B button switches your onscreen cursor into a shield that you'll then use to block attacks by holding it in front of incoming projectiles."
