The dinosaur hunter is back. After changing hands with the demise of Acclaim, the Turok name is set to return to consoles. The series was hurt by declining quality ever since the the pair of outstanding N64 games that began the franchise. A return to the exploration, atmosphere, and quality of the first two games could make this a big hit.

This new FPS offering will star Joseph Turok, the hero from Turok 3: Shadows of Oblivion. The story begins with Turok traveling by spaceship to a planet inhabited by dinosaurs while searching for rogue general Roland Cain. It appears that Propaganda has taken some of the mystique away from Turok, by mentioning him as an ex-special-ops soldier instead of the "Chosen-one-time-traveling-savior" he appeared to be in previous games. The universe mirrors this new theme, focusing this time on space-traveling waring factions instead of the chaotic space-time-anomaly that previous games existed in.

The gameplay has been modernized through the influence of Halo, Far Cry, Gears of War and others. Squad based combat is now included, as well as a variety of vehicles. Turok staples, like the knife, bow, and of course, dinosaurs are still a big part. Graphically the Unreal 3 engine looks to do a great job, based on early screenshots. The dinosaurs, especially, are meticulously crafted. Destructible environments and excellent AI are both promised. Depending on the commitment to quality at Propaganda, this could end up being a great return to this FPS franchise.

TXB: Turok Review

Teamxbox.com - February 1, 2008

The intellectual property known as Turok means different things to different people; depending mostly on the generation in which they grew up. Many of your parents, for instance, may remember the Dell Comics version of Turok that showed up in the 1950s. On the other hand, many fans of the Valiant redux of the Turok IP didn’t even know that this dino-sniping, Native American bad ass spawned from an era before video games were even invented.

Speaking with Canada.com, Vancouver based Propaganda Games studio manager and VP Josh Holmes had a few interesting comments about the development of their recently released Turok title. "The 360 version was pretty much complete in the November timeframe [sic]," Holmes said, "most of the team at the point was focused on polishing the PS3 version up to the standard of the 360."
