Bioshock is a first-person hybrid (involving elements of a shooter and role-playing) set in an alternate 1960-era where people have become dependent on a substance, called "Adam," that enhances people genetically. The game takes place in an under-water ruined Utopian city called Rapture following a genetic arms race and war. The game begins with the character in the ocean near Rapture after a plane crash. The player will encounter genetically and mechanically modified opponents as he explores Rapture.

The game features "emergent gameplay" that involves "unprecedented" interactivity with many features from the System Shock games. The AI features "AI ecology," meaning it will explore opportunities in the environment and situation to carry out its goals rather than run scripted actions. The player can manipulate this to cause enemies to attack each other or NPCs to help the player. The player can upgrade the character with new abilities and weapons by collecting Adam (the currency in the game). These abilities can be used to manipulate enemies, such as confusing them into thinking you are one of them. The gameplay involves player decision making in moral situations that will impact events in the game.

IGN Game of the Year: PC

Simply put, if you haven't played this game, you've missed out on one of the best gaming experiences of all time. The entire presentation, from the story to the visuals to the acting, encourages a level of emotional involvement that transcends the game play. The bonus is that the game play is nearly as good as the story. Play it.

"We've already expressed the excitement and horror of suddenly finding ourselves crashed in the open ocean with only a lone foreboding tower rising from the blackness of the deep as salvation. We did so while delving into the various aspects of BioShock's strange nature as a first-person shooter including the various plasmids, tonics, and weapons that will help you survive in the underwater circus of despair that is Rapture."

Q&A w/ Stephen and Jesse about water effects "Q:In which ways are enemies or other characters able to interact with water? SA: Water conducts electricity, which can be deadly, and it puts out fires, so a burning AI will run to the nearest pool of water and dive in if there's one close enough (spewing out an appropriate cloud of steam)."

Metareview -- BioShock (Xbox 360, PC)

t would be an understatement to suggest interest in BioShock is hitting critical mass. We've personally lost a few writers on staff who took advantage of the Toys R Us deal earlier this week to the city of Rapture. Furthermore, we'd have lost our own editor Mr. Grant if his Xbox 360 hadn't gone belly-up ... he's seething. The reviews for BioShock are flowing in and they've been overwhelmingly positive. It's going to be an early holiday season for Irrational Games 2K Boston. Now the game just needs to sell well.
