December 2007 NPD Data
Video game hardware sales in December were below the market's expectations. Total hardware units came in at 6.938 million units, 13.04% below the market's expected 7.978 million units. Sales of all consoles, except for the PSP, were below the market expectations.
Many industry observers were concerned that the slowing US economy and slower holiday shopping this year would dampen game sales; however, strong sales in November may have lead the market into optimism for December. It appears the slower shopping this year did affect hardware sales.
As expected by the market, the Nintendo Wii lead home hardware sales with 1,350,000 units, below the expected 1,734,000 units. The miss in Wii sales is likely due to a shortage of supply as the console is sold out across America. Xbox 360 came in second for home consoles with 1,260,000 units sold, 8.75% below the market expectations of 1,461,000 units. Once again, the PS3 came in third with 797,600 units sold, just 8,75% below the market's expected 424,400 PS3 units to be sold.
Nintendo DS sold 2,470,000 units sold, compared to 2,854,000 expected unit sales. The PSP sold 1,060,000 units, inline with the expected 1,054,600 units.
Growth in video game sales were inline with expectations. Total video game software sales grew 36% from $1.74 billion in December 2006 to $2.37 billion, just 0.28% below the market's expected $2.38 billion.
The month's big winner was once again Activision's Call of Duty 4 which crushed market expectations again. The Xbox 360 SKU sold 1,470,000 units compared to an expectation of 929,900 units.
Sony's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3) also smashed expectations, selling 206,000 units, well ahead of the market's expectation of 139,900 units. Electronic Arts' Half-Life 2: The Orange Box (PS3) disappointed with only 56,500 units sold, compared to an expected 106,900 units.

2Man, I scored big on everything I invested or shorted in this time around. Except, everytime this news comes out all other futures go into frenzy, and everything is tanking. So far everything I gained, I have lost already in the other futures.

As I said yesterday somewhere else, I wish I had had money to short sell Wii and NDS. There was no way they both could reach those levels with the shortages. I lost 30k with Mass Effect (fortunately I bought 2,000 only), and won around 50k from Uncharted, 25k from Mario Party, and 25k from combined hardware and software. Then I lost around 20k for having January 2008 PS3 at 25k and was forced to sell at 20k, and won around 130k from January 2008 Call of Duty 4 for Xbox (bought at 28, sold at 45). Overall, I made over 100k today, which is a good number for me since I prefer to go slowly.
My big bet is Layton, though. That jewel will reach 1m in Japan alone, and I expect 800k in US and 1.5m in Europe by the end of this year.[ Veteran ] [ Level 8 ] [ Rank: 1151 ]bids

1The only things I can remember is that I did very well on Total Software, did okay on CoD4 but cashed out prior to NPD because of worrying (would've done a lot better if not),

But that history didn't tell you what is your initial position before cash out. So you still need to keep track of your position one day before NPD release (copy & paste your buy / sell price).

How do you know how you made out on each stock? I try to copy & paste my positions just prior to NPD results but I wasn't following when NPD was reporting DEC. 1I came out ahead for this month's NPD data. I had a long position in Super Mario Galaxy, a long position in Mario Party DS, and a short position in Half-Life 2: The Orange Box. All of these positions ended up paying out to me (in retrospect, I wish I would have taken more risk on the futures with larger position, and I will most likely be doing so now that I have been able to build up a war chest per-say).

PlayStation 2 has sold 35m units or so in US. While Microsoft may not be aiming at those numbers, it is still disappointing.
PlayStation Portable saw a very small increase year to year (from 953,200 to 1,060,000), as well as Xbox 360 (1.1m to 1.26m) DS went nuts (1,6m to 2.4m), while Wii is still hard to decipher (could a well-stocked console saturated the market?). PlayStation 3 still has a lot to gain, but they are giving up a lot of terrain.
As for the predictions, very good numbers for me. Missed Mass Effect, but got a lot form Uncharted.[ Veteran ] [ Level 8 ] [ Rank: 1151 ]bids

3Incredible CoD4 numbers, we underestimated them again, maintaining last month's sales (at least we got a 60% difference instead of a 90% one!). And this time our predictions were too high, contrary to last month which were too low.
I am a bit disappointed with Xbox 360 numbers. Last year it did 1.1 million with Gears of War... I thought with Halo 3, Bioshock and Mass Effect it would be much higher.[ Veteran ] [ Level 8 ] [ Rank: 1151 ]
