Those are worldwide numbers. Microsoft is basically non-existent in Japan, and yet Sony is barely keeping pace with the 360 worldwide.
While Sony kept pace in America for the first 5 months, its sales are now below what the 360 was at. This leaves Sony and Microsoft fighting for 2nd place in their respective homelands. Sony is coming off of 2 generations of absolute console dominance, so there's no way to spin these numbers except as a huge hit to the company.
It's possible that they could get a boost due to the price cuts and bigger titles in 2008 (though they've had tons of delays in titles and lost exclusivity in many others).
