@Laoldar, It doesn't matter where PS3 or 360 are weak in comparison to eachother, what matters is WW sales, as long as they're not being completely dominated in each territory. PS3 has not been dominated by 360 in any territory for 1st year sales, 360 has in JA.
Furthermore PS3 has not been out for a year yet in EU/Other territories so if we include this information PS3 has actually outsold 360 in 1st year sales.
The 360 did not sell more than PS3 in 1st year sales to any degree that holds any significance. I don't know why you keep stating this when the data shows they did equal sales in their 1st year...
360 did not have a fairly weak 1st year line up, they had many AAA/AA games that are ranked among the best 360 games to date.
I said Japan showed weakness in Sony's worldwide numbers. They should be well ahead of Microsoft, but they're only equal with them worldwide because while Microsoft is weak in Japan, Sony is equally weak in America/Other areas.
I said it was lower than the 360 in America because it is. They are equal worldwide, but the 360 (at one year) sold more than the PS3 at one year.
Also, remember that the 360 had a fairly weak first year line up as well, so you can't excuse Sony's sales numbers just based on software.
@Laoldar, I completely disagree that PS3 selling as well as 360 in its 1st year is bad news for Sony. Just because 360 is non-existent in JA doesn't add strength to 360, it hurts the 360 because they will never gain much more sales there while PS3 will.
What are you talking about its sales are now below what the 360 was at, the graph clearly shows they're equal in 1st year sales up to this point. Just because PS3 is not as successful as PS2 does not mean it has not done as well as 360 in year 1 and that it selling as well as 360 in its 1st year is not good news for its future against 360.
Only about 33 million consoles have been sold WW this generation. Last generation sales have reached ~165 million. This generation has a long way to go.
If Sony can do as well as 360 in its 1st year, with less AAA/AA games and a pricepoint that was $100-$200 higher this is good news for PS3 vs 360. Many are still waiting until the exclusives come in 2008.
Those are worldwide numbers. Microsoft is basically non-existent in Japan, and yet Sony is barely keeping pace with the 360 worldwide.
While Sony kept pace in America for the first 5 months, its sales are now below what the 360 was at. This leaves Sony and Microsoft fighting for 2nd place in their respective homelands. Sony is coming off of 2 generations of absolute console dominance, so there's no way to spin these numbers except as a huge hit to the company.
It's possible that they could get a boost due to the price cuts and bigger titles in 2008 (though they've had tons of delays in titles and lost exclusivity in many others).
Certainly good news for PS3 when you consider how expensive it was throughout the past year and that its getting exclusives that should be AAA next year.
At its current price point I would say that the PS3 is aiming towards current PS2 owners. Not the casual gamer. Current PS2 owners don't need the BC...they are fully BC already with the machine they have in their house.
I also personally believe that software BC is coming as soon as all hardware BC units have been exhausted (all they need to emulate is +15% or so to be on par with their main competition I understand)..this was how the PS3 was originally intended to be ... the Hardware BC was a scramble at the end to get the machine out the door.
