From what I can tell, Microsoft has never released any form of solid XLA sales numbers. Most people online are asking the same thing... "How many?" With the numbers of 360s I'm surprised they haven't at least released the numbers of the top few selling XLA titles, almost as bragging rights against Sony.
Lets hope Sony handles this differently and releases sales numbers of at least their major PSN games.
Also, I agree with Gaara, 1.2 mil sounds pretty good, and a demo would definitely be the smart move for Sony.
This would get the game out to people who don't spend all their time online and reading about new upcoming games. The person who just goes onto the PSN sometimes to sang a few free demos.
I, for one, will be buying the game as soon as it comes out.
I have a quick question to ask, does anyone have a link to a release of XLA data for sales of downloads there. I found one of Geometry Wars numbers, but are in early 2006, so was seeing if anyone has found for recent numbers so we can see how much people actually buy games on XLA, which would be a great indicator of how well games on PSN will do. Better yet, does anyone have data for PSN, I don't know if Sony has released any yet since the PS3's user base is small at the moment, so download numbers might also be to small to make positive press, but it would be a great help in seeing how a game like this would do.
I still expect this game to get around 1.2 million sold over lifetime. Even if they stop shipping it at retail, they can still continue to offer it as a download on PSN for as long as they keep PSN up, which would give it legs it would not otherwise have if it was retail only. Also, as more information is released on this game, it seems like people are just getting more excited and the game is getting more 'buzz' as Lithium put it. They might be releasing a demo of LittleBigPlanet over PSN this fall, so hopefully data on the number of people that downloaded that will be released, as it will see how many PS3 owners are actually interested in the game.
Not at all... this game has gathered quite a good amount of "buzz". Although the number of PS3s are low right now, after the next holiday season when many more games will be available, they will increase. I say at least 1 million in sales would be safe to bet on. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it sold quite a bit more than that. The first PSN Greatest Hits anyone?
hmmsphil, I already submitted both of those, you can see them if you click view more under videos and articles. and I agree, the character customization is the coolest stand-out feature yet. Submitting articles gets you DKP if you do it the normal way.
I was a pessimist at first, but this game in particular will have a couple of factors to use when it comes to estimating sales. Number of times a game has been viewed/played is one, number of games created, etc... This is the future of the PS3 and games in general so I guess we better get used to it.
Laoldar, I can see where your coming from, sales from PSN will be totally dependent on Sony releasing accurate sales figures. But if this is going to be a hit we all know Sony will be all to obliging to show how well it’s doing and maybe on the more generous side if anything. I guess there’s the problem if it’s not so hot on the PSN Sony might want to disguise that fact. So with regards to sales figures it will either be a massive hit or a flat flop.
As for does this appeal to PS3 owners at present, who love there fast paced action packed gaming?? I think its going to depend on price, for the stereo type I just described (not talking about all PS3 owners, just a random comment that im sure to regret) if cheap enough this could be a nice casual social game play something that the PS3 lacks at the moment.
Over all I love the idea of the game, the causal play the customization and hopefully the community that this game could inspire. When I can afford a PS3 this will most certainly be on my shopping list.
If a large amount of its sales come from online, that could be bad for the stock. It'll create a lot of uncertainty about sales because users are then entirely dependent on the whims of Sony releasing numbers (if they do so at all).
And yes, the game could appeal to a wide range of people. Does the PS3 itself? Quirky and inclusive games can sell systems if they're $200-300, but can they sell a $600 system?
