2 more great pieces of news today for this console.
Sony being involved in the VOIP launch in the UK could mean a bump in sales of the PSP in areas where wifi clouds exist (universities for instance) and likely indicates that Sony will roll out similar agreements in new areas. As current users take hold of this tech the word of mouth to people that might have overlooked the PSP should grow.
Also, with the firmware update to the PS3 you will now be able to stream to your PSP any music or video content on your PS3 to your PSP at any hotspot (not just local), ...as PS3 sales ramp up there are more synergies with the PSP that may bump sales of the handheld.
That IS what I am agreeing is so significant....ignore the JaJah recommendation as it isn't direct to PSP voip.
This will likely require 3.5 firmware which is due for end of May release and will also finally bring ANYWHERE hotspot access to your PS3.
The release of the Go!Cam (with built in mic) will do well with the BT initiative. Not sure it will sell anymore PSPs but it makes it more usefull to those that do have one.
kspraydad im not sure, most articles i find on it indicate that you can attatch a mic and camera to your PSP, and the PSP is the actual device you use to communicate with. it will let you call a landline and or PC.
After looking more deeply...please IGNORE JaJah...you are using the PSP to initiate a call but it gets routed to a landline...so it uses VOIP tech but not the PSP to actually make the call.
That said then this announcment with SONY and BT is very significant.
I didn't think DS had a voip capability except in game chat. Anyway...this is great news for PSP owners but isn't the first VOIP. PSP users worldwide can already access VOIP services through JaJah and their PSP. In addition, Skype functionality is already written into the code of the PSP and is yet to be unlocked. http://www.gadgetell.com/2007/02/skype-may-be-coming-to-the-psp/
PSP getting 140 new titles this year, video download service a hardware refresh...
Quote: Finally, there was news on Sony's handheld gaming device: "The company also indicated that 140 titles would launch on the PSP, while a video download service and hardware refresh are expected later this year." No further specifics on this 'hardware refresh', presumably an incremental PSP upgrade, have yet been officially released by the company.
As a continuation of bungalow Bob's comments on 'how well' the PSP is doing:
In the US NPD's data on "portable hardware dollars market share" for the calendar year 2006. According to the data, Sony's PSP system actually beats Nintendo DS by a fraction of a percentage.
PSP 42.3 DS 42.2 GB 15.5
Of course Japan is a different story but it shows, I think, that there is still lots of reason for Sony to support and push the PSP.
