The Wii GLS stock chart has been adjusted for November 25 to filter out extreme price moves as a result of large portfolio rebalancings so that the chart is readable.
If this was hardware alone I would suspect higher but as it probably accounts for Marketing and Developments costs then it may be this price.
I believe the claim has always been they made money from launch so if this was hardware costs alone that would be very surprising especially with the volumes sold.
It's a well-known fact that Nintendo turn a profit on every Wii they sell. What's not well-known is how much profit they make. Nintendo won't tell us, but Macquarie Securities reckon they know.
And, according to a report in Forbes citing Macquarie data, it's $6 per Wii. Bear in mind that's an analyst calculation, not hard fact, but it's likely not too far off the mark.
@vGInfidel, Since I used to frequent GameFAQs forum, and I was one of the FAQ contributor there, I might be able to tell you something about it's poll.
It is true that not all visitor of the site took poll, but most of it's forum member (registration needed, but it is free) usually vote for its daily poll. There are lots of Nintendo and Square Enix fans there, and yearly character contest usually have Nintendo (Mario, Zelda, Link) and Square Enix (Sephiroth and friends) as finalist.
"why would i vote in a poll to tell everyone i dont have a Wii?" When I used to frequent the site (2000 - 2007, IIRC), I participate in the poll to tell people that : - I don't have plan to buy PS3 at launch ($600 is too much for me) - I don't have plan to buy X360 at launch (no interesting game for me) - I plan to buy Wii at launch (Zelda:TP is the reason)
As a bonus for those who read my story up to this part, let me share with you some of the old (2007) poll result : Do you plan to buy a PlayStation 3 this year? 15-Jan-07 Already have mine, thanks! 6.45% 6,813 Yes, as soon as I can find one 3.45% 3,641 Probably, I'd like to get one 9.41% 9,946 Maybe, if there's a price drop 23.00% 24,300 Not now, it's just not worth the price 57.70% 60,966
Do you plan to buy a Wii this year? 16-Jan-07 Already have mine, thanks! 34.75% 32,020 Yes, as soon as I can find one 16.85% 15,521 Probably, I'd like to get one 18.53% 17,077 Maybe, I could be convinced 10.35% 9,537 Not now, there are no killer games I want 19.51% 17,980
All 3 of them 8.77% 7358 360 and PS3 3.82% 3208 360 and Wii 21.64% 18156 PS3 and Wii 9.21% 7726 Just a 360 9.11% 7642 Just a PS3 9.89% 8294 Just a Wii 27.55% 23114
PS3 is 22.28%, X360 is 30.48% and Wii is 47.24%.
While these polls are not statistically correct or reliable, it did show, as early as Jan 2007, that Wii are going to have bigger sales than X360 or PS3.
62% of people who took the poll have a Wii, not 62% of visitors to the site. I for example visited the site to find the CoG tags for GoW2, i dont have a Wii and i didnt take the poll, so already the figures are wrong as i am a visitor and it is not taking me not having a Wii into consideration, and im sure theres 10,000's more like me.
The fact is, why would i vote in a poll to tell everyone i dont have a Wii? It is far more likely that people will vote in the poll to show their support for the Wii as that is the console they have and want to see succeed. Unless gamefaqs MADE you vote in the poll before you could access the site, you cannot claim these figures or try to draw any conclusions from them.
There was 106487 voters in this poll. If 61.86% of people who visit gamefaqs have a wii, then there is a huge market for the Wii. PS3 and Xbox 360 nail down the 18-30 demographic, but Wii dominates the kid, and parent demographic.
@necron101, Advice from EEDAR : For reference, we consider games targeting the core market to have a less competitive landscape as core targeted titles are typically spread out through the year and receive less competition upon release.
The researchers at Electronic Entertainment Design and...Research have been looking at console game sales patterns. Looking at how long it takes a game to enter "price protection"lowers the wholesale cost of a game so that retailers can keep it on the shelves at full price, even when the public are ignoring it. What they've found is that this practice occurs for 7.5% of 360 games. And 9.09% of PS3 games. But the Wii? It happens for 15.1% of titles.
Nintendo executive vice president of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway has told gamers that they should expect titles that will appeal to the 'Halo crowd' in 2009.
