I wonder who are increasing their NSMB Wii and Wii Dec Futures yesterday. I know that I didn't buy any Wii futures, and I sell some of my NSMB Wii Futures (since I didn't know about this news at that time).
@apujanata, If only I knew about this info before I sold my NSMB Wii Dec Futures :(
Luckily, I still hold onto my Dec Wii futures, since I believed that 3 Million is a very distant possibilities. I originally thought 2.5 - 2.7 Million is a much more reasonable estimate, since 3 Million meant breaking US December record.
Nintendo has clinched two hardware sales records – the best ever selling machine in Europe and the fastest console to 20m sales.
The first record is claimed by the DS, which via its various guises (the DS, DS Lite and DSi) has now sold a total of 40m units in Europe – making it the best selling games console the region has ever seen.
In addition, the Wii’s race to 20m unit sales in just over three years makes it the fastest selling console to reach the milestone in the territory.
Nintendo estimates that December sales in the United States will exceed 3 million units. Nintendo estimates that lifetime U.S. sales of New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii are approaching 4 million.
@Zex_M19,US only presumably...and why did you change the title of the article from "Wii’s banner year" to something with 3 exclamation points!!!???
Anyway...a review of the list leaves me VERY suspicious...how can they have the PS3 120GB in 17th spot ahead of the total year sales of the 80GB or 160GB and all iterations of the Xbox system...there MUST have been an Xbox that out sold it for the whole year.
Amazon has released its list of the top selling video game items for 2009 – and Wii hardware, peripherals and games fill nine of the top 10 slots. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 hardware don’t appear on the list at all.
Nintendo’s Wii has become the fastest-selling home console in the history of the UK, surpassing six million sales after two years and 51 weeks since launch.
2006 : 185,000
2007 : 1.81 million
2008 : 2.73 million
2009 : 1.31 million – but it’s got a few weeks to build on that before Christmas.
Nikkei, Nintendo has begun the process of reducing the number of Wiis being manufactured.
The report says that two Japanese companies - Mitsumi and Hosiden - are facing massive losses in revenue this year due to the "declining fortunes" of the Wii and a "drop-off in orders from Nintendo to assemble game systems".
Both companies are now staring at a drop in net profits of more than 50%.
The tally breaks down as follows: 550,000 Wiis and more than one million DSes. Impressive, yes, but 800,000 Americans shook off their turkey comas and waddled out to buy Wiis last year.
At a BMO Capital Markets event for game companies and investors earlier this month, Reggie Fils-Aime presented two slides that, based on Nintendo of America research, put the population of female "primary players" of home consoles at roughly a third of the population of their male counterparts.
Of course, Fils-Aime brought this up in order to demonstrate how much of that market is dominated by female Nintendo console-owners: 80% or, roughly, nine million.
