Final Fantasy games for the Playstation have always had 40-50% of their lifetime sales come from Japan (ranging from 2.5 to 4 million units).
The PS3 has floundered in Japan in a big way. For historical comparison:
FF7 was released 2 years into the PS lifecycle with 5 million consoles already in Japan. Also boosted system sales.
FF10 was released 1 years into the PS2 lifecycle with just under 5 million consoles installed. Impact on system sales, but much smaller.
If it's released by the end of this year, Sony will be lucky to have 2 million systems in Japan. Plus a recent interview hinted that SquareEnix may have to multi-plat to recover costs (sony exec, http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6167864.html ).
I think it's important to consider that Japanese sales could potentially be cut in half (if not more) from the usual FF sales. That would leave this game overpriced and that's not even considering how much smaller the American and European markets will be for the PS3 compared to ths PS/PS2.
pilias_simber, if you have submitted so much content for this game (can you please include quotes next time, easier to know which submissions are worth looking at), you would know that this game will be big just like all the other FF games in the main series. The only problem here is that it might get some competition from FF Versus XIII but I think that the current price is undervalued. I expect this game to sell around 5 million copies over its lifetime.
Well they are finally launching this IPO. Expect this stock to be very highly priced due to the popularity of the game, even beyond what one would reasonably expect in sales for the game, much like the Halo 3 stock and other popular stocks.
Square has said before that this "project" would cost about twice what their FF7 Compilation did...and that included over 6 games.
Then again, I don't understand why they're a series of games around a label. I just don't get a good vibe from the whole FF13 thing...seems a bit pretentious. If FF13 amazes on the PS3, I'll have to reconsider but we'll see.
I agree with you about the 360/Wii. The Wii is the breakout success so far and the 360 is nonexistent in Japan. Why would they want to immediately alienate 1/3-1/2 of the fanbase? DQ being focused solely in Nintendo platforms supports that as well.
Motomu Toriyama: Fabula Nova Crystallis is not exclusive to PS3 and Mobile
"In fact, the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII project isn't just limited to three titles - there are many different aspects. In terms of the formats we're reaching, as well, it's not simply exclusive to the PS3 and mobile phones."
They guessed that Xbox 360 RPG fans would be happy with this news, but in my opinion, it's more likely that a new FF XIII game will come out on the Wii.
Any blogger, journalist or not, who actually interviewed the charter designer probably has relevant points about the game and possibly about its release.
Besides the fact that it just makes sense, how many years did it take them to do FFXII you really think they will put out XIII a year later?
It'd be nice if we could submit articles on the Unlisted Games pages. I just submitted an article talking about a Final Fantasy XIII demo coming under the Final Fantasy XII page.
