That's according to a report in the latest Xbox World 360 mag. Though Ubisoft isn't saying anything, the mag says it's heard that the surprising development decision has forced Splinter Cell back into the festive period of 2009 - or as late as Spring 2010.
It’s this merging of an intelligent take on stealth in real-world settings with Splinter Cell’s traditional strength – espionage combat – that makes Conviction the most interesting prospect in the franchise since birth. This is Assassin’s Creed-meets-Ghost Recon. This is Saboteur-versus-Call of Duty. This is a title determined to distance itself from Snake’s shadow in order to take its first steps in a new direction.
Ubisoft has confirmed to VideoGamer.com that Splinter Cell: Conviction, announced as a PC and Xbox 360 title, will not be coming to PS3 and will not be coming out on April 1, as previously rumoured.
"The next Splinter Cell game has been redone three times over already. Developers just can't seem to include good gameplay in it. That's part of why it got delayed."
When last we saw it, Conviction was the most ambitious game we had ever seen. Even nine months on, that remains the case. With the old Chaos Theory team working alongside the best Ubisoft has to offer, if it doesn't deliver in the most epic manner possible, we'll consider it a COMPLETE failure. Oh yes.
I'd think this is a great buy at the moment: well known franchise, exclusive, will no doubt be advertised because of that by MS, got the benefit of a delay for polish. Is there a flaw in my judgement why it's only 153dkp?
@Apocalypse, I don't think the cores or cpu architecture have much bearing in this case. I would speculate that the memory limitations of the PS3 are more likely the culprit. Or maybe Bluray transfer rates.
This is true, that in their present form these titles would not be able to be made on the PS3. That is no different from stating that the bible, in its present form, could not be read in French, German, or Japanese. This, however, does not mean (though it does mean to imply) that they CANNOT be translated to a language that is preferencial to that console.
But there is something to the articles. In several interviews from ubisoft they have mentioned this power of the 360. This actually has to do with the difference in how the three cores versus the CELL works in each of their respective consoles. Whereas the CELL is 8 little chips working from a 9th, they don't do too much on their own. Each cell does minimal tasks while being orchestrated from a center leader. These little cells, while great at computing, are not as great at multitasking.
This is where the three cores of the 360 come in. Though most games don't take advantage of this key component of the 360's design, Ubisoft has decided to allow those cores to affect different aspects of gameplay, in this case crowd dynamic and reaction. So in that regard, no, the PS3 cannot directly run this unit. There would be a little more than translation, but this does not mean that an "interpretation" of it could not happen. But as many of us out there who like Anime you'll note...
when your favorite shows get translated into english, something gets "Lost in Translation." -Adam
@welshbloke, it doesn't sound like a limitation of the PS3 as much as the code is designed specifically for the 360 software architecture and Ubisoft doesn't think it's worth their time to write a PS3 version.
This is similar to games written for Windows using Direct X and then studios foregoing a Mac version (Macs don't have Direct X). This doesn't mean the PS3 can't handle the game, it just couldn't run the game in its current form due to software issue and the studio doesn't want to spend the resources to make it work (cost vs potential revenue).
