Nintendo has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the company shipped almost 200,000 DSi units for the Japanese launch of the console on November 1, priced at JPY 18,900.
It boasts a built-in web browser allowing users to access the DSi Shop, a camera and improved audio functions, a slot for SD memory cards and a slightly larger screen. Another shipment of 100,000 units will be done this week.
US and Europe released is not expected until summer 2009 at the earliest.
The DSi is out in Japan real soon. But as far as the US and Europe are concerned? Nintendo Europe say "Spring 2009", Nintendo of America say "late 2009". But what about Nintendo Japan? They're the boss, what do they say? Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata says this:
Pocket Gamer has been told by one developer that there are propblems with one of its forthcoming games being compatible with the DSi hardware.
The game in question has apparently been refused approval by Nintendo for 'freezing up' when played on DSi.
If true should we expect there to be problems with the hundreds of games that have already been released on DS?
I thought this the other day, I actually shorted the DS heavily which caught me out. I still wonder how much change does it take before you consider it a new model but I will not be getting caught out again, still got a big chunk to DS stock to shift ;)
If DSi is same as GBA to DS/GB,then it should be counted seperate, but it seems to be like GBC or GBASP upgrade so would be included in DS GLS estimation.
Nintendo's decades-long streak of region-free handhelds is coming to a close. In a statement to CVG, the company confirmed that Nintendo DSi-only cartridges and downloadable content will be locked to the region where you buy the Nintendo DSi. Web browsing, photo sharing and playing DS games will be region free, but US gamers hoping to import the console between now and "well into 2009" will probably have to brush up on their Japanese to enjoy the best new features.
