If they are only talking US and EU I'd like to point out then the discrepency between Activision and VG Chartz.
VG currently lists non Japan DS penetration as 49.95 million while Activision is talking 'over 41 million'.
For sake of argument that is 42/50 = or a 16% overestimate of the installed base (I would tend to think that Activision would have a publisher's knowledge of what the true install base is)
Are there official Nintendo stats that will clear this up?
Activison only focus on western markets so that is why they only mention size of install base in those markets. I do not think Guitar Hero has been successful in Japan, they just released the same game as in US with same songs, both PS and Wii versions were released there.
@Dicker_87, First, you need to correct the URL link. There was double http:// in the link.
Second : This is based on Gamasutra article, so not exactly new news : "I think it's a fact that the market blew up more rapidly than even [Nintendo] thought it would," Okamoto told Gamasutra. "And the faster something expands, the easier it is for it to deflate again, right? I hope they come up with a way to avoid this with the DS. But for one thing, there are way too many titles out all at once."
"You've started hearing the phrase 'Atari crash' pretty frequently," he added. "People are talking about how the second 'Atari crash' is around the corner. And Nintendo is the one that has to figure out a way to stop it."
Third : The only rationale behind the comment is : - Way too many titles out all at once. - People start talking about "second Atari crash".
There are also way too many titles out all at once on PS2. He didn't mention what is so unique about DS compared to PS2, so PS2 don't have crash, but DS will have crash.
For me personally, I still buy the same amount of DS game this year compared to last year, so I am not buying this "impending DS Market Crash" thing.
Capcom vet and Game Republic founder Yoshiki Okamoto says that the market for Nintendo's DS may be destined for a market crash similar to Atari in 1983.
@Refreshment, Awesome. With all that talent and a development team of over 50 on a DS game hopefully it turns out very well, I'm willing to bet it will and will be a big seller for its genre. Good to see its getting manga and anime, that will help sales too.
"The latest issue of Famitsu has the first report on an original DS RPG being developed by Image Epoch and set to be published by Sega. Titled World Destruction, the game is drawing lots of attention due to its staff, which includes people who worked on Xenosaga, Chrono Trigger, Grandia and Final Fantasy VII."
"Japanese retail tracker Media Create announced today that the DS has sold a total of 100 million pieces of software in its home territory. It took the DS three years and five months to reach this feat. In contrast, the PlayStation 2 took four years and three months."
