According to Nick Sharples from SCEE, the additional memory onboard the new PSP is crucial for running the VoIP application. He told Pocket Gamer: "We had studied the possibility of supporting Skype with PSP-1000 but had to give it up because of the smaller size of main memory on PSP-1000 series."
"Famitsu is reporting that the PSP's Skype service will sell for $25 to $40 and include, it appears, the same microphone that was packed in with PSP language software Talkman.
The site also has up these first Skype screens."
"Sony have announced a new 16GB MS Duo, which when combined with a longer battery life may finally make the PSP your first and only multimedia companion for long-distance flights. Or...it will be if you think spending $300 on a memory stick is acceptable behaviour. If you do, this baby's out in March."
"The GPS receiver for the Sony PSP is about to find its way out of Japan and into US gamers' hands. According to Sony's CES 2008 page, "Your PSP will provide 2D/3D locations, driving directions, POI's, and even downloadable city guides.""
Sony just announced the availability of Skype on PSP courtesy of a firmware update due later this month. It's Skype as usual: free calls between Skype users; SkypeOut to make calls to regular old phones; SkypeIn to receive calls on your PSP. There is one notable caveat however: Skype will only work on the PSP-2000 ie., PSP Slim.
Just how did Sony's PlayStation Portable fare in the calendar year 2007? This year's about to ride off into the sunset, but before it does, we'd like to invite you to take a few moments and look back into the year that was. It has certainly been a memorable one....
United Coders, the development company working on Dragon's Lair DS at this very moment, is looking ahead. Their next plan? Dragon's Lair PSP. They just need a publisher (aka sugar daddy) to come around, bring some cash and distribute away when the project is done.
"Sony's CES 2008 section of its website has revealed that the PSP is to be updated with Skype functionality. Although offering little info, Skype support is clear to see in a list of things you can do with a PSP.
"Call friends, talk trash to fellow gamers or catch up with acquaintances via Skype for PSP system," states the Sony website.
Presumably we can expect an announcement and further details on Skype integration during CES, which runs January 7-10."
@Laoldar, I was one of the people quoted, and I can completely back up my claim that the PSP was sold out everywhere. Also I believe PSPFanboy is under the same hood as Joystiq since their sites are integrated.
If you looked at the page itself, you'd see that their story is based entirely on the comments people made at "cheapassgamer.com". So they basically just copied messages from a bulletin board...people can decide how reliable that is.
