Proving the analysts wrong, GTA: Chinatown Wars launched far below their prognostications in March with a mere 89,000 units sold, NPD has confirmed to Joystiq. The game was expected to show that a high-profile M-rated franchise like GTA could perform well on Nintendo's handheld. With a mere 0.3% of the 29.3 million DS units sold in the US rocking the crime drama, that could be interpreted as not being a good sign for more big M-rated titles on the system.
Didn't see the number poster here anywhere but this game did 88,704 units for March....Those that are shorted are missing out on a huge gain due to the TSE rules (I know...they are what they are).
I am long on this as well. The game is awesome, one of the highest rated on the DS. It's launching near to when the DSi comes out, established franchise. Addressable install base of over 100m.
It'll have good legs I think but I'm not sure how well it'll do first month, so I'm keeping the big money back to see if the price goes down to bargain levels after March NPD
I'm long a little (I can afford to buy much of anything it seems) given the sales of GTA on PSP with a much smaller install base.
I guess my theory would be that if you take the adults and kids out of the mix on the DS you still have enough late teens/early adults that are in the target market for this game such that the market is bigger than the PSP market.
PSP sales were close to 3 million and over 5 i think for the 2 different PSP games.
"Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is a triumph, not just in terms of bringing a difficult game to a new platform intact, but because it actually improves it in the process, and demonstrates a mastery of DS form and function."
The GTA games on PSP did a great job of cramming lots of stuff onto a UMD. Yet as big an achievement as that was, Rockstar think they can do better.
And what's more, do better on the DS. Speaking with Nintendo Power, Rockstar Leeds boss Gordon Hall says "We are very proud of all of the PSP games we have made, especially the two GTA games, but this game is far bigger". Really?
Would the downbidder care to share why he downbidded one of my screens for this game? Those screens were posted on here only hours after hitting the Internet. They were not available at the time of the earlier posted screens by Noobie. They are different than Noobie's screens, in that they show dual screen.
Brand new screens just released from Nintendoeverything.com. I posted them up. Visit this link for all of them. They lend even more credibility to the First Details rumor.
