FYI: Got this game last weekend. It is the best Nintendo game I have ever played. The music is insanely good and the gameplay is fun, challenging and easy to get the hang of. The soundtrack is great on 2 regards. 1.It has some classic songs, redone in a masterful way. 2.It has some epic new songs/music that is, for lack of a better word, inspiring.
the game is dense with things to do, but it also allows you to pick it up for 10 minutes and get something accomplished. Which is great for the casual gamer and this was one of my gripes with Zelda TP. The whole game is very upbeat and happy, which is a contrast to the kill-fests that have plagued the top ten over the past few years.
It is cute/whimsical, but definitely requires some concentration and ability.
Also there is a neat 2p mode that allows you to collect star bits and shoot them. this is especially helpful when you get to trickier levels like the "Sweet Sweet Galaxy" which has you jumping over moving platforms with shapes cut out, and there is electrical currents. Also, allows me to help my wife on some harder levels, but taking care of the baddies with little star bits.
I'm just pointing out that Nintendo first-party games tend to sell well for years, and are not as frontloaded as most games are. Of course, this might change on the Wii and (I've said before) people should watch Galaxy's sales from now until next summer to see if that's the case here.
@Laoldar, So the market is realling thinking ahead huh? And what should happen to this stock if November numbers in the USA arn't good. Like if it's under a million...stocks aren't looking so good the closer it comes to the NPD report being released....
While this title is likely overpriced, don't make the mistake of only considering the current install base of the Wii.
Big first-party Nintendo titles tend to sell consistently over the entire lifespan of the console and Nintendo doesn't tend to release competing games (ie, there likely won't be another Mario platformer on the Wii).
How is this at 14 million copies sold when there's only like 15mil wii's sold world wide? And this game isn't even doing well in Japan...it's doing really bad apparently...
At No. 1, clocking almost 600,000 units in sales was Dragon Quest IV on the DS. The only Wii game in the top tier was at No. 6, with Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, reaching just over 62,000 units sold. Most depressingly however, was that this week saw Super Mario Galaxy pushed out the top ten to No.11. Media Create only supply units sold for the top ten games, but we can assume it sold less than the PlayStation 2 pachinko game at position ten, which managed 35,000 units.
IGN: What do you think is the one thing about Mario Galaxy that you're most proud of?
Yoshiaki Koizumi: Oh, just being able to make Galaxy at all. (laughs). Actually, the one thing I wanted to communicate is the possibilities for co-op play, in the form of Co-Star mode. This type of co-op play is not something I've really seen before, and I think we found a particularly good implementation in the game.
@jsmrekar, The key thing here is not that Costco has 50 copies of them but that Costco still has 50 copies of it that haven't been sold yet. It would be interesting to see how many they started with and how fast they flew off the shelves during Black Friday.
The problem with Mario Galaxy is the hype has pushed the value of the stock up higher than the actual sales can attain in three weeks. With all the news of people wanting a copy of the game, how much do we know about those that actually purchased it? Most people who want it will purchase the game during launch while those who are getting it as a gift or who are undecided will most likely wait to buy it until some time in December. The Decembers futures will be interesting to watch but November has been pretty well saturated and now we are just seeing the hype wear off it.
