Earlier today Microsoft announced that all Games for Windows Live features will now be made totally free, in addition to revealing an online marketplace that will launch this fall that will feature digitally distributed PC gaming content. Later on, we had the chance to speak with Games for Windows senior global director Kevin Unangst on the announcement, who gave us more information on just what Microsoft is up to on the PC.

Speaking at the conference's Casual Games Summit, general manager of Microsoft's casual-games program, Chris Early, strongly hinted that an announcement regarding gameplay between mobile platforms, PC and Xbox 360 will be made in tonight.

Wow, what a day for handheld news. First, NVIDIA announces this high-defintion computer on a chip, then Apple applies for a trademark extension to cover video games, and now Microsoft announces that it will acquire Danger Inc., the creator of the SideKick (Microsoft also closed a deal today with Sony for the first Sony Ericsson smartphone powered by Microsoft Windows Mobile).

Shacknews can corroborate word that former Metal Gear Solid 4 producer and one-time games journalist Ryan Payton will be serving as creative director on the new Halo project in development by Microsoft Game Studios and Peter Jackson. Reports of Payton's new role surfaced on Kotaku as a rumor and "very reliable news," with Shacknews having heard the exact same information from its own reliable source.
