Microsoft: Wants to overhaul LIVE, double userbase

Reuters - February 21, 2008

Submitted by deftangel (291) at 2:04PM PST on February 21, 2008

Microsoft is looking at ways to overhaul the online gaming and content service for the Xbox 360 and hopes to double the number of users on the service, an executive said on Wednesday. But with 5,000 hours of video and more than 100 arcade games available for download, finding better ways to organize and display that content is a priority as it contemplates the future of Live. "We want to take the system to the next level. We want to get to 20m (users) quicker than we got to 10m"

Bungie Actually Leaving Microsoft?

Game Informer - October 2, 2007

Submitted by yamaro (94) at 3:27PM PST on October 2, 2007

Rumors are floating abound that Halo masterminds Bungie will be leaving Microsoft. While the majority of Internet denizens are stating that this could never happen and that it's not true, we've heard the opposite. From a source close to Bungie, Game Informer has learned this rumor has some merit. It looks like with Halo 3, Bungie really is finishing the fight. Our source stated that Bungie is "tired of making Halo, and didn't want to do future Halo games." For an unstated, but significant amount of money, Bungie shareholders bought the studio name back from Microsoft. Our source also revealed that even though Microsoft will retain the rights to Halo, Microsoft also has "the right of first refusal on future games." This means that Microsoft has the first shot at publishing Bungie's future titles.

360 "WiiMote" in development since Aug07

MTV - April 7, 2008

Submitted by deftangel (291) at 2:13PM PST on April 7, 2008

I had to check the date when I read this. Apparently it's been in development with Rare since last August and due to be released by the end of the year. MTV couldn't name their source but seemed confident having verified the project's development with "several industry sources". They even have a sketch and details of it's intended functionality at the link. Had it been any old blog, I wouldn't have posted it but MTV aren't lightweights and Rare sure have been very quiet of late...

If you've been having problems logging into Xbox Live then you're not alone. Microsoft reported earlier today a global outage of services that need a Microsoft login - that, of course means Xbox Live. Initially this was viewed as a local difficulty - local to the USA and Canada. It was then confirmed that the issue was global.

The company's entertainment and devices unit has made money for two straight quarters and is on target to be in the black for the fiscal year ending in June. After years as a money pit, the unit looks to be profitable going forward, says Robbie Bach, president of the E&D unit. Video games are the big driver, but the unit also includes mobile phone software, PC peripherals, TV set-top box software and Zune portable music players.
