next-gen.biz - April 21, 2008

Submitted by Mushashi (5) at 6:58AM PST on April 21, 2008

Nikko Citigroup expects Sony to begin generating profit from PlayStation 3 units in August. Analysts at the wholesale investment bank upgraded Sony’s rating on Monday, engadget reports, noting that the platform holder will from August no longer be making a loss on each system sold. The website says that profit-making PS3s would likely feature sub-65nm cell processors, sub-90nm RSX graphics chips, or both, since the smaller chips are cheaper to manufacturer.

PS3 Hits 10.5 Million Sold

Kotaku - February 18, 2008

Submitted by lstormy10 (294) at 6:50PM PST on February 18, 2008

"An Associated Press business article, dedicated mostly to the impending conclusion of that stupid, distracting "format war", has buried in its conclusion some PS3 sales figures. According to the piece, Sony have now sold 10.5 million PS3 consoles since launch. Which is good news for them, as it puts them squarely on track to meet their goal of selling 11 million by the end of March, a target they set themselves last December."

Analysts: Sony lose $100 per PS3 Slim

andriasang - August 20, 2009

Submitted by apujanata (14935) at 5:11PM PST on August 22, 2009

Analyst at Daiwa Institute of Research: The slide lists the material cost for the PS3 as ¥40,000. The announcer explains that a price drop to ¥29,800 means that Sony's losses will increase with each system they sell. However, if they increase their sales, the material cost will gradually go down, and so too will the losses.
