During a conference call for overseas investors following Sony's Q1 09 financials, Nobuyuki Oneda Sony Corp's CEO and Executive Vice President has revealed that manufacturing costs of the PlayStation3 have dropped by 70%. “The cost reduction since we introduced the PS3 is very substantial and this is on schedule,” Oneda-san replied when asked about manufacturing costs.

Taiwanese website UDN is reporting that Sony has signed production contracts to begin manufacturing a new model 'PS3 Slim'. Companies Foxconn and Pegatron are working towards delivery of the remodelled system for July, says the report, translated by Engadget.

Sony may be preparing to lower the price on PS3 this August in order to take advantage of the launch of EA Sports' Madden, which is always an event unto itself. Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia reports in his latest industry note that “industry sources indicate Sony is planning a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August, just prior the launch of Madden (8/18) and the start of the back to school shopping season. This will naturally be a positive for the industry.”

SCEA just announced Massive Action Game for PS3. Zipper Interactive developing. The game will support 256 players in single battles. It’s a squad-based combat title SCEA boss Jack Tretton says will “stretch PS3’s architecture.” A movie was shown featureing huge battlefields, bases, bombs and vehicles.

Hackers have broken into Sony's PlayStation website and visitors' computers are risk, the IT security firm Sophos has warned. Web security experts at SophosLabs discovered unauthorized code from criminals on pages promoting SingStar Pop and God of War. The code would cause pop-up to appear on visitors screen telling them viruses had been detected on their computer in an attempt to scare the user into purchasing anti-virus software.
