Could CD and DVD playback be coming to the Wii?

Nintendo.com - August 13, 2007

Submitted by koshbaby (432) at 1:09PM PST on August 13, 2007

Nintendo's own Wii FAQ may inadvertently suggest that the system IS capable of playing CDs and DVDs. Interestingly, Nintendo clarifies that Wiis produced "in the end of 2006" do not have this ability. Will a future system update unlock this feature?

Nikkei, Nintendo has begun the process of reducing the number of Wiis being manufactured. The report says that two Japanese companies - Mitsumi and Hosiden - are facing massive losses in revenue this year due to the "declining fortunes" of the Wii and a "drop-off in orders from Nintendo to assemble game systems". Both companies are now staring at a drop in net profits of more than 50%.

Engadget - September 22, 2009

Submitted by mrahaju (9) at 10:21PM PST on September 22, 2009

The rumors were true, and Nintendo's knight in shining armor is finally about to see its first-ever price drop. Beginning on September 27th at Best Buy (and everywhere else, naturally), the happy-go-lucky machine will be offered for just $199.99. Interestingly, it appears that suits at BB expect Nintendo to make an official announcement on the drop this Friday, yet retail stores won't begin selling at the discounted rate until Sunday.

Wii Sales Show Weakness

FT - April 6, 2009

Submitted by kooistrak1 (30) at 7:50AM PST on April 6, 2009

Nintendo conceded that sales of some recent titles, such as Wii Music, had not taken off but said that: “We hope to line up strong software to support hardware sales in the second half of the year.” That sales of Wii hardware now depend on game launches suggests that the novelty of its controller, which measures motions by the player rather than button presses, has worn off, at least in Japan
