Gran Turismo 5 cost roughly $60 million to develop

Joystiq - November 5, 2009

Submitted by TheSmilkman (101) at 4:33PM PST on November 5, 2009

At the annual SEMA car show in Las Vegas this week, Gran Turismo 5 creative lead Kazunori Yamauchi was on-hand demoing his game for showgoers and talking to the press. Amidst a torrent of questions from Autoweek, Yamauchi roughly calculated the cost of creating Gran Turismo 5: a cool $60 million. That's what five years of development on a single game has cost Polyphony Digital thus far, an amount Yamauchi says was totally justified in order to "get it right."

There are those in this industry that cry with anticipation for a new Halo. Others for a new Mario. I'm neither of those. My kryptonite has, and always will be, the most ambitious racing franchise in existence: Gran Turismo. For the past ten years now, Gran Turismo has been Sony's most successful franchise, in addition to being one of the most popular in the world. With only four games under its belt, the series has sold an astonishing 50 million copies to date

For anyone who watches Top Gear this is great i love the show and it will appeal to anyone petrol head or not.

With the recent rumors and videos that have been going around about Gran Turismo 5 having a track editor, we decided to contact the developers to find out if it was true or not. Now, we have a official answer. They were kind enough to give us a quick response and this is what a representative said: “Yes it will have a track editor. You will be able to rebuild a track from scratch or edit the tracks that are already put in Gran Turismo 5.”

“We really, really want to put damage onto our vehicles,” he said, speaking in a video interview you can find after the link. “We’ve had a lot of discussions with the manufacturers and although at the beginning they hated the idea of deformation, now they’re slowly coming around to it. We’ve still got a few to convince, but we will. Expect deformation in the very near future: very, very soon.”

It has only been a few days on the market, after some six years of development, but already Gran Turismo 5 for the PlayStation 3 is already topping sales charts. But why, what exactly draws people to this racing simulation cult? I don’t get it, enlighten me.
