Six new tracks have been announced for the third entry in the Guitar Hero franchise: "Miss Murder," by AFI, "3's and 7's," by Queens of the Stone Age, "Raining Blood," by Slayer, "Reptillia," by The Strokes, "Paranoid," as made famous by Black Sabbath, "Cities on Flame," as made famous by Blue Oyster Cult, and "Mississippi Queen," as made famous by Mountain.

While Activision's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock can't match MTV Games' Rock Band for sheer quantity of downloadable songs, it has the competition soundly beat in the freebies department.

Activision has officially announced plans to release Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, the next title in their music game series and the first to center around one single band. The game will be released this June for the PS3, PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii consoles. To promote the new game, Activision will release a free song from Aerosmith for Guitar Hero III, "Dream On". The song will be released and be made available for free on Saturday-Monday for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Here is a snip:

June 1, 2007 - Much of the Guitar Hero franchise's success is due to its well known status as a natural party game...GH II expanded the multiplayer fun with co-op play and pro face-off. Guitar Hero III adds more. A lot more.

Metallica's upcoming ninth studio album Death Magnetic hits Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock in its entirety this Friday, the same day the album goes on sale. And to wrap up the good news, Activision says the album will be fully forward compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour, which is quite a trick considering the additional instruments in the new game.

Last month, British rock legends Def Leppard appeared on Rockline Radio to promote their 10th studio album Songs From the Sparkle Lounge, slated for release under Universal Music Group's Mercury Records label on April 29. During the Q&A portion of the show, guitarist Phil Collen said that the band's hit singles "Photograph," "Animal," and "Rock of Ages" will appear in Activision's upcoming Guitar Hero IV.

A group of GH fans from the popular fansite scorehero visited Neversoft for an exclusive look at how the game was shaping up and return with an extremely glowing report on the game, as well as the exculsive announcement of four previously unknown tracks from the setlist, and a large number of detailed impressions of the game and their experiences with it. (by the way, the game is absolutely fantastic by nearly any metric - i know this firsthand).

First Tracks and Game Details Announced

Activision releases tons of preliminary details on the game, including 11 songs from the setlist, some details on game modes, and details about the bundled guitars. On the setlist there are some songs by returning bands (Rolling Stones, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Heart), and some songs by bands all new to the series (Beastie Boys, Tenacious D, Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer). In addition Activision confirmed that there will be an all new multiplayer 'battle' mode, authentic musical venues, as well as an 'expanded' online mode. The next gen models (360, PS3, Wii) will come with a Gibson Les Paul style guitar controller, while the PS2 will get a Gibson Kramer. They also promise that among the as-yet unannounced bands they still have 'giant aces in the hole'
