Godfather II Delayved

Joystiq.com - February 4, 2009

Submitted by Buggles (1066) at 7:43AM PST on February 4, 2009

Electronic Arts today announced the delay of the Godfather II game. CEO John Riccitiello was quoted saying that the flood of Christmas releases has left retail flooded with titles that are now reduced to clear. Releasing the game in that retail environment would harm its chance to perform in line with the game's potential. This delay would also allow EA to build more buzz for the game, increasing potential day 1 sales figures.

Godfather 2 whacks competition in UK, debuts at number 2

Joystiq - April 15, 2009

The UK likes its crime, apparently, as EA's Godfather II has managed to soar to the #2 spot on the region's sales charts. Sure, we've seen a few Guy Ritchie flicks in our life, but we're fairly surprised that you lot turned out in droves to check out the exploits of the Corleone family. The game even managed to topple Resident Evil 5 and Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, which we all know are like crack to the UK.

Eurogamer Review 4/10

"Having had such a great run of form with new IP, this is a stark return to the EA of old, where a treasured licence is butchered irredeemably. Lacking both a challenge and soul, and failing to even engage on a narrative level, what you're left with is an overly forgiving shooter with weak strategy elements, which only serve to make it even easier for you."

EA Ships Illegal Weapons To Press, Wants Them Back

Kotaku - April 10, 2009

Electronic Arts today contacted game writers around the country asking them to return the brass knuckles they were sent as part of a promotion for Godfather II. Brass knuckles or metallic knuckles are illegal in many of the states that they were shipped to. They're also illegal in California, where EA is based. EA did not respond to emails seeking comment about the legality of the items they shipped and whether they faced any legal actions for shipping them across state lines.

IGN's First Look

The handling of mature content, such as violence, profanity and nudity, didn't feel gratuitous and thrown in. These features all came together in the context of the action of the game, which felt appropriate to the situations and the criminal activities taking place without being too explicit. Although it's still early, it looked quite promising, and if this is where the title is now, EA could have a hit on its hands when the game is released sometime in February of next year.

If you've seen The Godfather II recently enough to remember its story in detail, take a moment to choose which of these genres is best suited to convey its unique portrayal of Mafia drama: third-person shooter, sandbox action, or role-playing strategy. Got your answer? So does developer EA Redwood Shores, and it has chosen "all of the above" for its upcoming video game adaptation of the same name.

Godfather II Developer Interview

On differentiation: The Godfather II is about organized crime, and that's what the Corleones are, the epitome of organized crime. It's about a family, it's about building these guys in your family, knowing who they are and what their strengths and weaknesses are, how to deploy them, and also have the action yourself. Those other games are about being the guy who gets told what to do inside that world. You make your moves in the game, but you're not really building a family.
