Halo 3: ODST (Xbox 360)
Campaign of Halo 3: ODST to be shorter than Halo 3

XBOX World - July 25, 2009

In our interview with Lars Bakken of Bungie and Microsoft Game Studios' Ryan Crosby recently, the question was raised about the length of the game. This was met with an unexpected response considering the less rigid parameters that make up the ODST gameplay. Halo 3 offered a campaign in the region of 5-8 hours depending on difficulty and so to hear that Halo 3 ODST is going to be a shorter game is quite surprising.

The first details on Bungie's ambitious Halo 3 expansion Recon have finally emerged, detailing new equipment, more human characters and surprisingly, an open-world city. Revealed in the latest issue of US magazine Game Informer, players take control of The Rookie, a faceless, voiceless Orbital Drock Shock Trooper part of a five-man team rocketed into Ground Zero of Earth city New Mombasa, during the events of Halo 2.

Halo 3 ODST Priced Like A Full Game, Loaded With Content

Halo 3 ODST may be a spin-off, but Microsoft wagers that enough content will be packed into the game's box to warrant a $59.99 price tag. Bungie Studios has suggested that Halo 3 ODST won't be as long as Halo 3. So why will it run the cost of a full game? Here's a list of the included content according to information released by Microsoft to the press today:

Halo 3: Recon Is 3-5 Hours Long, "Not A $60 Title"

Kotaku - November 13, 2008

Someone's already got their hands on the Halo 3: Recon-themed December issue of Game Informer. Spilled the beans. Those beans tell us that, as you could probably have guessed when you first heard it spoken of as an "expansion", Halo 3: Recon is only 3-5 hours long. Which is pretty damn short. Luckily, then, it'll have a pretty damn short price tag, Bungie's Joe Staten saying "we do not view this as a $60 title". Hopefully he means $30, and not $59.99.

Its parent company, OTX, polled 1,000 gamers across various demographics every week through March and April, and discovered that Halo 3: ODST is the most anticipated game. Bungie's upcoming spin-off managed to narrowly best Modern Warfare 2 (if you can believe it), according to data Gameplan Insights provided to Gamasutra.

About 2.5 million people have bought the latest Halo 3: ODST game ($60, for Xbox 360) since it was released two weeks ago, a nice reception for a game that doesn't star Halo main man, the Master Chief.

IGN Review 9.0/10

There are places where ODST could be improved, but when it comes down to it, every Halo fan should buy this game. Even if you've lost interest over the years or haven't ever given a Halo game a look, you'd do well to grab ODST & a few friends for some of the best multiplayer gaming around, especially with as wonderful an addition as Firefight. The campaign is a tad short, but well-crafted & exciting. Then there's a whole disc full of multiplayer maps, though you may already own the bulk of them.

If you recall, this is our recently announced stand-alone extension to Halo 3 that features an all new campaign played from the perspective of an ODST in the heart of a Covenant occupied New Mombasa. In addition to sleuthing around the city and piecing together the details surrounding your squad's whereabouts, the game will also include some new Halo 3 multiplayer content as well as one or two unrevealed surprises when it's released next Fall.
