NPD: Game Biz Falls 23 Percent In May

The retail game business as a whole saw $863.3 million in sales during the month, as it continues to be challenged by last Spring's blockbuster launches of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Grand Theft Auto IV and Wii Fit, which launched in March, April and May 2008, respectively.

The Sims 3, Red Faction Lead U.K. Sales

Electronic Arts' The Sims 3 for PC and THQ's shooter Red Faction: Guerrilla for consoles led U.K. sales charts for the week ended June 6, U.K.-based sales tracking firm Chart-Track said Monday. Also notable is EA Sports Active for Wii, EA's newly-released exer-game which came in at number three for the week, again topping Nintendo's original exer-game, Wii Fit.

How Microsoft stole the show at E3

CNET conducted a poll earlier this week asking readers which company--Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony--had the most impressive announcements at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. More than 10,000 people responded. More than 51.9 percent of the respondents said Microsoft bested its competitors. Thirty-four percent of those who answered the poll said Sony had the best announcements. Nintendo finished last, with just 5.6 percent of respondents saying it had the best E3.

No end to current hardware cycle - analyst

With the current cycle in its third or fourth year, Greenwald suggests that fears of a decline in hardware and software sales are unwarranted and that E3 itself will "provide some signs that the industry is alive and well".

Rumor: Mass Layoffs Hit Bionic Commando Developer GRIN

Sweden-based developer GRIN is said to be the latest game studio hit by cutbacks, as multiple sources have told Kotaku that the Bionic Commando and Terminator: Salvation dev has laid off more than 100 staffers.

Pachter's April NPD Estimates

Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter just put out his US console sales estimate for April, putting Wii at 480,000 units, 360 at 275,000, and PS3 at 175,000 consoles. The analyst predicted another tough comp for the month, saying he expects sales of $550 million, down 17% compared to last year's $660 million.

Capcom Co., Ltd. would like to announce that net sales increased to 91,878 million yen (up 10.6% from the previous year), operating income increased to 14,618 million yen (up 11.4% from the previous year), ordinary income increased to 13,808 million yen (up 12.6% from the previous year), net income increased to 8,063 million yen (up 3.3% from the previous year) in financial results of fiscal year ended March 31, 2009.

Microsoft to Buy Video Game Developer

Microsoft said it plans to acquire gaming company BigPark for an undisclosed amount. Once the acquisition is complete, BigPark's developers will become part of Microsoft's Game Studios, where they will work on an exclusive Xbox 360 game that they have already been developing. Microsoft said it expects to unveil a product the companies have been working on at the E3 Expo in June.
