Japan: Xbox 360 cracks 1 million, PS3 just over 3 million

According to Enterbrain figures, the Xbox 360 and PS3 have both achieved milestones in Japan. As headlines would have you believe, the Xbox 360 has surpassed the one million mark for consoles sold, whereas the PS3 has done much more admirably, pushing over three million systems on the populace. The Xbox 360 achieved this after roughly four years on the market (it released in Japan in December, 2005), wheras the PS3 claimed its figure three years after launching in November, 2006.

PS2 Price Cut to Boost Sales 10%

The research firm reports that PS2 titles accounted for 21 per cent of all home console software sales in the last quarter of 2008, and 19 per cent in the first quarter of 2009. Today's USD 30 price cut will boost hardware sales by 30 per cent from the previous quarter and 10 per cent year-over-year.

With business failing and stores closing all over the country, GameStop reports record sales and earnings for 2008, and expects the trend to continue this year with plans to open 400 more stores. With 2008 sales rising 24.4% over last year to $8.8 billion dollars, GameStop laughs at our puny economic recession.

Micheal Pachter foresees a world without console wars, calling the current crop of hardware "the last generation of consoles." The ballsy claim was made during GamesBeat 2009, a conference going on in parallel to GDC, where the Wedbush Morgan analyst reportedly declared that the future belonged to a "standard delivery platform" instead.

Through February 2009, Nintendo's DS and Wii continued to dominate hardware sales while software for those systems continued to rule the top software lists, according to the latest NPD Group data released on Thursday. Microsoft's Xbox 360 built momentum from its strong showing in January, and also made a strong showing the top 20 software. Meanwhile Sony's platforms uniformly lost ground, although the exclusive Killzone 2 made a strong showing on the PlayStation 3 with only two days of sales.
