April NPDs: Mortal Kombat and Xbox 360 the Top Sellers

Mortal Kombat was the best selling game in the month of April, according to the latest figures released by the NPD Group. It sold nearly 900,000 units between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. Portal 2 was the next best-selling game, although no specific numbers for Valve's latest game were cited. That's just as well, as the game undoubtedly sold a great deal through Steam, the numbers from which would not be included in the NPDs.

Final Super Mario All-Stars shipment due March 13

Last batch of 25th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. Wii compilation will hit stores next month. Nintendo fans who have been putting off picking up Super Mario All-Stars will get one last chance to grab the commemorative pack. Nintendo announced today that it is readying a final shipment of the currently almost-sold-out compilation, which was released last December to mark the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. The last batch will arrive in stores on March 13.

New Assassin's Creed in the works

This morning, Ubisoft revealed better-than-expected earnings for the quarter ending December 31, 2010. As part of the earnings report, the company also announced that it had shipped 6.5 million units of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the latest installment in its award-winning, critically acclaimed action adventure series.

Game software sales flat in 2010

Today NPD released its yearly sales figures for 2010, and the results were mixed. According to the company's new measuring standard, adopted last June, some $15.4-$15.6 billion of game software was purchased last year in the US, a change of 0 to -1 percent.

Gut Reactions: 3DS at Nintendo World 2011

Over the weekend, Nintendo held an event in Japan, giving the public an opportunity to get its hands on Nintendo's new handheld system, the 3DS. Nintendo also used this as an opportunity to give an initial launch schedule as well as general pricing information for upcoming 3DS games. Third-party publishers were also on hand to give demonstrations of their upcoming 3DS games.

Analysts pessimistic on early 2011 game sales

Pacific Crest's Wilson and Wedbush's Pachter caution investors that first months of the new year could show the same sort of declines common throughout 2010; price cuts, 3DS could spark turnaround. Yesterday, the industry-tracking NPD Group reported overall US retail game sales slipped 6 percent in 2010. Today, analysts are saying to expect more of the same to start 2011.
