Last month, Microsoft upped its estimates for its Kinect motion-sensing camera peripheral, saying it expected the add-on to build an installed base of 5 million by the end of the year. Wedbush's Michael Pachter reports that sales of Sony's console were below expectations; Microsoft's motion-sensing camera outselling PlayStation Move 5-to-1. Following NPD's report of US November sales yesterday, both Nintendo and Microsoft announced sales figures for their respective game machines. The DS was the best-selling platform for the month with 1.5 million units, followed by the Xbox 360 with 1.37 million units, and the Wii with 1.2 million units.

November NPD: Best month ever for retail, Xbox

Joystiq - December 9, 2010

Submitted by afsplat (130) at 10:15AM PST on December 10, 2010

November is traditionally a big, big month for games, thanks to the impending holidays and the temporary financial insanity bestowed upon Americans by the Black Friday Effect. This November may have been the biggest. The NPD reports that last month was the "best November on record in terms of new physical retail sales," ahead of November 2008 by around $30 million. Call of Duty: Black Ops had the biggest first month of any game ever, with 8.4 million copies.

From the original grey PlayStation to chunky PS2 and the sleeker PS3, the three generations boast thousands of titles that have redefined gaming. Here, Megabits picks 16 of the best games from the past 16 years. These key titles have obviously spawned sequels over time that are equally worthy of mention, but those listed are those which I think "defined" each console and the PlayStation brand in general.

Game of the month Oct 2010

IGN - November 1, 2010

Submitted by apprentice (704) at 12:08AM PST on November 12, 2010

Overall, October was a rockin' month for video games. And it's a good thing, too, because we were huddled inside all month long, hiding from werewolves. And because we have neither the knowhow nor the wherewithal to craft silver bullets, we decided to pass the time playing games instead. It was a welcome distraction from the gnawing fear. But, being IGN editors, we couldn't be satisfied with just any games. We had to play the best. These are the games that wowed us in October.

NPD no longer to publish unit sales

Joystiq.com - October 12, 2010

Submitted by Jonman (379) at 11:39AM PST on October 12, 2010

NPD's monthly public report on video game software and hardware sales in the US will change this month. The most noticeable alteration will be the removal of hardware and software unit sales. The company will still provide a monthly list of the top ten selling "physical purchases" (i.e. brick-and-mortar retail) on consoles, but by title and not by individual platform SKUs -- meaning multi-platorm games will be clumped in one sum.
